If anyone of you is craving for U char kuay, Bay Hay Chee, Han Chee Pan, let me recommend this stall to you. It does not have any lavish decoration or design. But it sure sells quality food at very affordable price. Their mini yam and tapioca fritters (3 pcs for $1) are a must try!

    U Char kuay - 50 cents
    Bay Hay Chee -50 cents
Han Chee Pan - 50 cents with Tau Sar – 60 cents

Whenever I buy from them, they will either give me discounts or they will simply give me extras. I think this kind of gesture is already close to extinction in our society! Nowadays, food vendors will charge practically anything and everything. Even if is a glass of plain hot water for the baby, a cup of ice cubes or a packet of chilli sauce.

Last week, I was surprised to see that the stall is still operating after 7 pm. “We’ve received some complaints from our customers” said the owner. “We usually close the stall at around 5pm. By the time they finished work they will not be able to make it on time. Therefore, in appreciation of their support, we decided to extend our operating hours” he added.

Well, customer service at its very best. Good food, great taste, affordable price and meeting customers’ needs.

      32. Teck Whye Aquarium

This bird shop, Teck Whye Aquarium, deals only with birds not fishes, is not only one of the filthiest but also the messiest I’ve stumbled upon. Is a stark contrast to their sister company, Teck Woon Aquarium which is their immediate neighbour. Quite an obnoxious sight greeted you! Step right into the shop and the concoction smell of live bird feeds like the crickets, meal worms, grasshoppers, bird faeces, etc, fills the air. The stench makes you queasy. Satirically, you will find hordes of men congregating there with their pet birds during the weekends. Perhaps, due to the lack of bird shop in the vicinity.

The majority of things were disorganized. A lot of stuffs were sprawling all over the place. Large quantity of bird cages crammed up almost the entire ceiling. You need to tread around carefully. The bird feeds and accessories were covered with dust and our hands were soiled while handling them! After a short while, our noses began to itch.

This shop sells mainly birds like the ever-popular Red-Eared Bulbul or “Jambul” and Zosterops (white-eyes) or “Mata Puteh” as the locals here called. There is also the highly prized Zebra Doves or “Merobok.” You can also find Zebra finches (1 pair S$60.00), English Budgerigars (S$50.00 each) and Canaries. We spotted the multi-coloured Gouldian finches and they are such a pleasure to watch. Hundreds or maybe even thousands of Spice finches- the type people buy to set it free, especially during Vesak day are available there too.

I think this shop is considered one of the best places to source for a good “Jambul.”

It only makes good business sense if they can step up their level of tidiness. If that day really happens, I’ll be back!

        33. CITIGEMS (IMM)

After taking our dinner, we decided to window-shop to aid our digestion. We wandered aimlessly around the mega mall and spotted a crowd gathering around Citigems at level 1. Well, it’s the Great Singapore Sales after all. So, we decided to be “kay-poh.” We look around and were captivated by the glittering gemstones on display - diamonds, amethyst, aquamarine, emerald, sapphire, opal, topaz, ruby, etc. WOW! We glance through the jewelleries in the display cabinets hastily hoping not to be harassed by the sales staff. We preferred to browse in comfort and at our own leisurely pace.

An amethyst pendant caught our eyes and we decided to have a closer look. We were happily chatting and discussing about the amethyst which we thought was the birth stone for March, till a sales staff, Josephine, promptly corrected us. We were told that it is aquamarine and not amethyst. My friend has always maintained that amethyst is her birthstone. We were flabbergasted! We looked at each other, jaws dropped! All this while…..sigh….. What a joke! We had a good laugh. Ha ha ha……….

Overcoming her shock, my friend immediately asks to see some of the aquamarine collection. Thereafter, she bought a pair of ear-rings for keepsakes as she believes it can bring her luck.

My friend has finally got it right this time. The credit must go to Josephine. If anyone of you is still unsure of your birth stone, you know where and who to look for. Good Luck!

This is THE bird shop for all bird enthusiasts. Apart from having wide varieties of birds like the parrots, macaws, parakeets, cockatoos, budgerigars, canaries and finches, they also have exotic birds in their collection .In addition, they have a well kept room where all the bird feeds, accessories, cages, books and toys are kept and you can browse in comfort. They do have baby chicks to offer from time to time.

The shop owner Ah Choon, is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and provides excellent customer service. It is not difficult to spot him with his cheerful disposition and burly figure.

Would like to share a couple of incidents I had while at his shop. The first was a canary which I bought and discovered that it had a vocal glitch. I brought it back a week later for advice. As most shops would be skeptical of buyers, ah Choon took it back and suggested that I picked another. I was impressed!

The other occurred when I badly wanted a grey singing finch after being treated to some nice melodies at my friend’s place. So, I make a trip to his shop. Regrettably, most of the grey finches were lackadaisical in their singing. I almost left there disappointed. Just then, ah Choon appeared with one and offered it to me. Without hesitation, I took it home even though I didn’t listen to its singing.

As it turns out the very next day, the finch croons a repertoire of songs much to my delight! Since then, I have not stopped recommending this shop to all my friends and bird enthusiasts alike.
