    Thanying is one of the oldest fine dining Thai restaurants in Singapore and some say, one of the most expensive. Thanying has been around for many years and many would remember this from their childhood.

    1) Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab ($30.00): Crab was fresh but the batter was a little too thick.

    2) Deep Fried Stuffed Chicken Wings: Must-try but a little pricey at $4.00 per wing. It was stuffed with minced meat and herbs.

    3) Thai Omelette with Minced Pork or Crab ($17.00): Very good. It was fluffy, and thick.

    4) Baked Prawns with Vermicelli in Claypot: ($7.50 per prawn) Quite pricey. Strips of bacon, and sliced Chinese black mushrooms wer a nice touch.

    5) Fried Pomfret topped with crispy garlic ($30.00): Fresh but very small and very little meat for a 30dollar fish. Loved the crispy garlic though.

    6) Kang Kong cooked with Special Sauce ($20): one of the recommended specialties, but it wasn’t extraordinary. It was standard kang kong sautéed with oyster sauce, chili and prawns.

    7) Green Curry Chicken ($16.50): The side of deep fried fish skins was an unusual touch. Nice and authentic fare.

    8) Minced Chicken with Basil Leaves ($18) is one of the better versions around. It was spicy, and the flavour of the basil came through in every mouthful.

    9) Rice Crackers ($16) came with a sauce that looked really disgusting, but it was goooood. Definitely a must-try.

    10) Papaya Salad ($16). It was refreshing yet spicy, sweet and savoury.

    11) Dessert buffet: ($9.00 per person): Absolute steal because of the price and variety of sweets at the buffet table.

      I've been patronising this old-school Hainanese establishment for as long as I can remember. They do the best chicken-soup based steamboat ever. No numbing MSG after-taste. Just clean, pure and good soup base. Prices are calculated according to the number of diners and how much the set is. No reservations allowed, but turnover is very high so even impatient persons like me will be willing to wait it out. Big plus point, the place is air-conditioned.

      1) Steamboat (all inclusive set): Consists of pig liver, cockles, squid, sea cucumber, fish balls, fish maw, sliced pork, sliced fish, vegetables and eggs. You can add and delete items as you like. All the food is served a la carte. Not buffet style. Everything's amazingly fresh, sweet and succulent.

      2) Additional Beef and Tripe: You can opt to have this additionally. Beef is tender, juicy without the artificial tenderiser taste.

      3) Sweet and Sour Pork: Pork is crispy yet tender and succulent, and the piquant tomato-based sauce was tangy, sweet and savoury all at the same time

      4) Poached Chicken. silky smooth, moist and packed with flavour

      5) Chicken rice is served in lieu of white rice, although you can request white rice instead. The rice is cooked the traditional way, whereby the rice is first fried and coated evenly in oil and spices before adding the stock to boil. This makes the rice very flavourful and one that you can eat on its own without any chicken and/or ingredients

      NB. I gave 8 stars out of 10 for service because I've known the people here since I was a little girl so they are extra sweet.
