Ribeye Steak   Braised Veal with Mashed Potatoes   Foie Gras!   Escargot   Chocolate Mousse
I wonder if nobody has been to this place or nobody have done a review on this place. I personally have been to this place two times in total, once this year and once last year. For both occassion, I was there for their set lunch. Well, it is mainly due to the fact that my girlfriend has this 1 for 1 set lunch for her birthday. One thing to note for my this review, I could not remember the exact fanciful names of each dish.

    Appetizers

    Foie Gras
MUST TRY. Simply melts in your mouth. The taste of the foie gras here is simply magnificent, although it is slightly salty. It will cost you an additional $6 to have this appetizers but it is defintely worth it.

    Escargot
Maybe the high expectations and thus the disappointment. Was looking forward to the escargot and the presentation was fanciful. However, it tasted bland. Even the 'ingredients' on top of it was quite tasteless too.

    Main Course

    Ribeye Steak with Fries
Honestly, the main reason why I came back this year because I had this last year and since that day, all the steaks that I have eaten would be compared to the Steak here. I chose mine to be medium done. Very juicy, very succulent. Most parts were easy to chew and not tough. Very good but the sauce was still a bit too salty. The fries is very ordinary kind.

    Braised Veal with Mashed Potatoes
Tasted good for the 1st few bites, but it makes you get quite tired of it after eating more. Very big portion. Taste very much like braised pork. Mashed potatoes with some special sauce was good though. You can defintely taste that is made from real potatoes and whipped very thoroughly, making it taste smooth.

    Desserts

    Chocolate Mousse
Sweet but not too sweet. Defintely one of the better chocolate mousse that I have eaten. Comes with berries.

    Yoghurt with Rasberry sauce
Not exactly sure the whether I got the correct name for this dessert. Defintely the better dessert of the 2. My girlfriend had it last year and choose to have it again, just like me choosing the steak again. Only had a small taste of it.

Total bill came up to $35.31 (1-for-1 set lunch), inclusive of the additional $6 (Foie Gras) and taxes. If I am not mistaken, the 3 course set lunch should be $24, excluding taxes. Also, they serve free-flow of bread, which is very good too. Defintely a steal for such a classy restaurant.

It was the 4th of July when my girlfriend and me decided to head down to Hog's Breath for my birthday lunch. We both had set lunches which comes with, soup of the day, main course and a dessert.

    Soup of the day

The soup of the day was clam chowder. Tasted very flavourful and there was shreds of meat. However, my girlfriend finds it abit too salty. There was also chunks of garlic bread in the soup. Soup was served in a cup, probably so that it doesn't get cold easily.

    Main course

    1)18 hours slow-cooked Prime Rib
The steak came with a choice of 'Natural' or 'Blackened'. 'Blackened' meaning a black pepper would be added. At least that was my interpretation when I asked the waitress what it meant. She also indicated that it would be more salty. Therefore, I chose my steak to be 'Natural' and Medium done. The steak was rather ordinary and one positive about it is that it is not too tough. Very easy to chew. Add a little salt and it tastes even better.

    2)Baby Back Pork Ribs
This dish turn out to be quite a disappointment. The meat was very tough. Difficult to cut, difficult to chew. Cafe Cartel's easily beat them. The sauce was only average. Both Main Courses is served with Hog Tail Fries and Fresh salad.

    Dessert

    1)Mississippi Mud Cake
There is only 2 choices of dessert for their set lunch. The desserts that was served up was probably the most impressive ones that I had for set lunches, instead of the usual one scoop of ice cream. The Mississippi Mud Cake came with a warm brownie with chocolate sauce and 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream and a few slices of strawberries. The brownie was a little too sweet but it was soft and basically went very well with the ice cream.

    2)Apple Crumble
The 2nd choice was the Apple Crumble. It also came with one scoop of vanilla ice cream. Very average, nothing much to describe about it

The total bill for 2 set lunches came out to be around $48 inclusive of taxes. Considerably value for money. One thing to note is that different choices of main course will cost differently.

Queens Pizza   Pizza Burger 1   Pizza Burger 2
Located directly opposite Khatib MRT Station, stood a small shop selling pizzas amongst the row of shophouses. You can probably see it without much difficulty from the Khatib MRT platform I had walked past it a couple of times but decided to give it a try today.

    Queens Pizza Meal ($6.90)
The Queens pizza had toppings that consist of Beef pepperoni, ground beef, Capsicums, onions and mozzarella cheese. The toppings was of adequate amount. However, the crust was too thick. It sort of covered the taste of beef for my pizza. I felt like I was eating plain bread half the time. The taste of the beef did not really come out as I could barely taste it, until i ate one slice of pepperoni. Had high expectations, but turn out to be disappointing.

    Pizza Burger (Beef) ($3.90)
The pizza burger was totally different from the one shown on the menu. There was simply no taste of beef at all. It was like a mix of melted cheese and tomato ketchup. That is all. The bread was so-so.

To conclude, it was disappointing. No doubt it is filling, but the taste it simply not good enough. Price wise, very much price of an average MacDonald's or KFC meal.

      14. Hooked!

It was a boy's night out on a friday night and we decided to head down to Rail Mall's Hooked! restaurant on my suggestion. As none of us possess a vehicle, the only way down was by bus. Quite a long trip from each of our houses as rail mall is quite a distance from any MRT stations. The restaurant gave a very homely and comfortable feeling. The staff was very attentive and approachable.

      Pacific Bonanza ($48.80)
This dish was stated on the menu that serves about 2 - 3 persons so my 2 other friends and I decided to give this a try. It comes with a choice of rice or fried linguini for each person. The dish included of 4 Mussels, 4 Clams, 2 Crayfish, 6 Prawns and steamed Calamari in Sweet mayo sauce. The quality of the food is good. The mussels and clams were very fresh. The prawns came with some unknown sauce but tasted unique in a good way. The crayfish was delicious but there is only 2 of it. The calamari in mayo tasted very average.

      Poached Salmon ($12.90)
My friend had the poached salmon and he mentioned it is very similar to that from Ikea. I had a piece of it and I agreed with my friend's opinion. The dish came with steamed potatoes, carrots and brocolli.

      Shark Vindaloo ($9.50)
This is actually curry shark rice to put it simply. The curry tasted a little sweet and not too spicy which is good for those who does not like their curry to be too spicy. The shark meat tasted no much different from other fish meat. Only maybe it is a bit tougher than others.

All in all, quality seafood in a very comfortable setting. The downside is the quantity of it, espcially when you are feeling hungry or you have a big appetite. Be sure to order for more if you are a big eater. Price wise, most of us agreed it is a little high considering the amount of quantity given.

      15. Red Star Restaurant
         08 Apr 2008 at 8:41 pm
Located at a quiet corner somewhere near Chinatown, sits a traditional dim sum restaurant known as Red Star Restaurant. It is on the 7th floor of a multi storey carpark, quite a weird location for a restaurant. My girlfriend and I took a 7-10 mins walk from Chinatown MRT station (Walk along exit D).

The dim sum is pushed around in trolleys by waitresses, and the service from them is rather friendly. Feel free to ask them for more sauces if you want. Basically, we had prawn chee cheong fun, steamed spare ribs, siew mai, fried prawn dumplings, steamed prawn on tofu, bbq pork bun, century egg porridge and egg tarts.

      Special mentions -

1)The egg tarts are a must-try. The egg custard is smooth and not too sweet. The crust is crispy and flaky. The egg tarts are usually sold out at about 130pm.

2)The Siew Mai is also one of the better dish compared to other dim sum restaurants. The meat complements the prawn very well.

3)The steamed spare ribs was good because the meat was soft and abundant, unlike some which has a lot of the ribs and very little meat and also very tough. But it is slightly more oily which is the down side.

Total bill came up to about $33 for 2. We left the restaurant satisfied and pleased that traditional dim sum still exists. Long live Red Star!
