       eggs   buta   curry   hachifukumaru   menu
This restaurant has not got a prominent location. It is hidden at the back entrance of OG Orchard Point where OCBC used to be. It looks authentic enough though and I used to have the impression that ramen is pricey for the lack of brand awareness.

I happened to chance upon the lunch promotion one day and decided to try it out with my friends. We couldn't believe that they serve $6 nett lunch set but limited to 30 sets daily! They have another lunch promotion for $12 that comes with a half a bowl of ramen of choice and rice dish.

As the sets were mostly sold out, we were left with the Buta-Manma and Curry chicken rice.

Buta-Manma is finely chopped chashu stewed in a slightly sweet dashi soup and placed on top of a hot bowl of rice. The bowl is garnished with bannou negi and white sesame seeds to create a flavorful side dish.

The Curry chicken rice was served with deep fried breaded chicken and the sauce is surprisingly spicy for a Japanese curry but not spicy enough for spicy me. Haha...

What we found most amusing is the serving of the soft boiled eggs. I have never eaten soft boiled eggs served like what they did in Yakun and etc. Nice!

The soup was not the usual miso soup but dashi soup. A nice change and so tasty.

The service is really good. The waitress were so friendly, prompt to our request and had good initiatives. For $6 nett, it's definitely worth a try but do go early as it's only 30 sets per day.

salad bar   steak   combo   spicy chicken   salad bar
If you remember Sizzler, you would know what this restaurant is like. It's almost 90% identical in terms of the layout and menu.

I love the salad bar station. There are quite a good range of salad, fruits, soup, finger food and pasta to choose from. If you don't feel like eating the main course, go for the salad bar buffet and get your dose of nutrients.

My friends and I took a long time to decide on the main course. Everything just looks delicious and we wanna order all but ah well....so...it boils down to Teriyaki cheese steak, Spicy chicken and if you want to have the best of both worlds, go for the combo like my friend did...Southern grilled chicken and Old-fashioned fish and chip.

I was worried that they might not do my steak well in medium rare but they did! The char-grilled sirloin steak topped with sautéed mushroom, cheese and crispy fried onion was tender and melt in your mouth.

Spicy chicken is a generous portion of chicken thigh fired up with a secret blend of spices but not too spicy.

The Southern grilled chicken is BBQ chicken breast topped with turkey bacon, cheese and finished with tropical salsa.

Fish and chip is battered dory fillet served with tartar and Thai chilli sauce.

My recommendation is to order a main course and you can enjoy the salad bar rather than just going for the salad bar buffet itself as the cost is the same.

If you have trouble searching for this restaurant, just look for the KFC near the interchange and take the stairs up.

           ayam   ayam   fish   tahu   ria
Ayam penyet though commonly sold in many foodcourts and eateries, not many cooked it as well as Ayam Penyet Ria.

I go crazy over indo food and had definitely tried out ayam penyet from many different stalls. None of them come as close as this. They have a good range of traditional indo food as well as beverages. The restaurant is spacious enough but if you can't get seat on level 1, they have another outlet on level 4.

The deep fried chicken is crispy on the outside and yet the meat is not dry. The deep fried tofu and tempe serve as good side dish to go with the meat. The best part about the ayam penyet lies in the chilli. This is the spiciest chilli that I could find in town and the best. Though spicy but yet you crave for more! For those who can't take too spicy food, I recommend that you order a glass of The Botol to go with it. It's an Indonesian brand red tea. Definitely beats your Lipton tea hands down!

The tahu goreng and gado gado are also very nice. The peanut sauce for both are very well done with mild spiciness.

Ayam penyet Ria is my only choice now...go try it!

          4. Antoinette

This is one of those pathetically exterior looking but makes you gasp in awesome when you enter through that plain looking glass door. Not the most accessible via public transport but definitely worth the trip. The restaurant was so beautifully decorated that you are immediately transported to a different world entirely. With the wide range of desserts and macarons being displayed near the entrance, it's as though one is being injected with a high dose of endorphin and just feel happy naturally.

Well, I am not one with a sweet tooth and I thought it's just a place for dessert. Boy...was I in for a surprise by the savoury menu! My friend and I ordered Antoinette's breakfast, Crab Suzette pasta, Pavlova Crepe and Antoinette cake....

The Antoinette cake is really special. It's a milk chocolate earl grey tea ganache with raspberry confiture. I don't usually eat cake as they are too sweet but this one is not! The taste of early grey is subtle and yet nice...I can't help but to go for 2nd and 3rd serving!

The hot chocolate smells really good and it's smooth, not too chocolaty and sweet.

The breakfast is definitely one to go for if you are really hungry. With your choice of egg, grilled bacon and sausage, pain the mie toast, basket of viennoiseries and hot chocolate. Yummy....

Crab suzette is a spaghetti cooked alio olio style with crab, white wine, chilli, cherry tomato and basil....Definitely interesting...the crab meat was shredded and added into the pasta. It mixed well with the other ingredients and the serving is also huge.

Pavlova crepe...omg....it's flamebeed caramelized banana, chocolate sauce, passionfruit banana sorbet, French meringue and vanilla crème Chantilly. It's really the top peeps...really...you gotta try for yourselves!

I am not a fanatic when it comes to beef and steak, however, Hippopotamus sold me the idea of the best local steak at affordable price yet!

I am never good at choosing the particular cut but I know I want my steak to be tender and yet with minimal fats. At Hippopotamus, they have a short descriptions of each type of cuts and the waitress was helpful enough to help me with my selection. I didn't want to spend too much on my first try and hence tried the Tenderloin "Chateubriand" 180g (NZ). That was the best recommendation ever! Prized for its amazing tenderness indeed and with no fats! Gosh....if I am a character from those manga, I would probably have tears flying out of my eyes as I sunk my teeth into the steak. It was so nicely medium rare done but yet so tender and melt in my mouth easily!!! Yummyyyyyyyy...

My friend was on diet and ordered only the French onion soup. I never tasted French onion soup anything like theirs before. It was loaded with onions and smothered with melted cheese..just imagine that...it was really good!

Their dessert range gets your mouth drooling especially the French toast nutella....definite to satisfy all your sweet and chocolate cravings. I would want to try out all their dessert! I guess that gives me the best excuse to keep going back so that I can try on different dessert each time.

They serve a good range of burgers as well and they looked nice too but I will stick to the steak on my next return. If you are a wine person, they serve a range of good wine to go with your steak!

Drop by Hippopotamus for the steak and you will be hooked!
