A wicked comedy inspired by the ditzy rom-coms of the ‘50s & ‘60s, where earnest young girls did their darnedest to find themselves millionaire husbands.

Set in modern-day Singapore, the story here revolves around five very different Cinderellas who end up on a reality TV show hoping to find and marry Mr Rich. Their fairy godmother is Alexis, the newly-divorced (and wealthily-minted) socialite who decides to groom these women to infiltrate the ranks of high society.

High Class is popular playwright Michael Chiang’s first new play in 13 years.

Directed by Beatrice Chia-Richmond, the offbeat comedy will feature original new songs by talented producer-songwriter Don Richmond. Both Beatrice and Don recently worked on the hugely successful 25th anniversary production of Michael’s Army Daze.

SYNOPSIS

Alexis Wee, 41, has always been the envy of every ambitious Birkin-toting girl in the country. Married to the richest man in Singapore, she was the proverbial Cinderella, rising from SQ girl and TV celeb to become the undisputed Queen of High Society.

But after 15 years of playing trophy wife to the roving-eyed property magnate Draycott Li, 60, the magic (and her patience) has worn thin. Especially after discovering that he has been sleeping with her aesthetician, Siobhan Loh, 33.

After a spectacular divorce that leaves her with the biggest settlement in local history, Alexis sets out on a personal quest: to selectively ‘groom’ single women for a shot at the pedigreed life.

She decides to produce a reality TV series, hosted by heart-throb Ryan, 31, where she will conduct a master class for girls with tai-tai potential.

Unfortunately, things do not go as planned. Her embittered ex-husband and his spiteful lover hatch a devious plot to derail the reality show and humiliate Alexis.

Instead of the extraordinary beauties that are expected, five women with zero tai tai potential are unveiled: property agent Meng Yee, 27, civil servant Sunita, 28, beauty queen Janine, 21, TCM therapist Yeh Fung, 26, and school teacher Azizah, 24.

Alexis is stunned, but must quickly find a way out of an impending nightmare.

But with help from best friend Samson, 43, head of the TV studios, and sagely advice from hairdresser Mac, 40, Alexis gamely soldiers on, embarking on a journey that may have more lessons for her than she realises.

This all-Singapore comedy promises delirious fun, peppered with endless surprises and buoyed by catchy songs and snap-happy choreography.
