Description
Lan Shui, conductor Chen Sa, piano
DEBUSSY Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun RACHMANINOV Symphonic Movement in D minor ‘Youth Symphony’ CHEN QIGANG Er Huang for piano and orchestra BIZET Symphony No. 1 in C major
Chen Sa shot to prominence winning the Crystal Award at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. She returns to Singapore with Chen Qigang’s Er Huang, a work described by its composer as “theme and variations with a twist”, and which is based on a well-known Beijing opera melody “Er Huang Yuan Ban”. It was premiered by Lang Lang at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2009. Lan Shui also conducts youthful but accomplished works by Rachmaninov and Bizet, including the latter’s first symphony, some themes from which were subsequently adapted for use in his opera Carmen.
