Description
SYNOPSIS Share in the vocal and percussive stylings of Singapore jazz luminary Louis Soliano. Together with his friends Mei Sheum (piano), Tony Makarome (upright bass), Tama Goh (drums), Nazreen Bin Mohd Abdul Kadir (cajon) and special guest Rob Collins, Louis will delight you with an evening of classic jazz standards and show tunes such as Sophisticated Lady, Moody’s Mood for Love and Spain.
Louis is virtually an institution in Singapore music, having played in every major music establishment here and beyond, and his musical journey reads like a history of the music scene in Singapore and the region. Coming from a famed family of musicians, he embarked on a music career in the ’60s which saw him touring the world in various ensembles and working with American and European jazz greats such as Matt Monro, Anita O’Day and Sarah Vaughan. He found himself drumming away in Vietnam even at the height of the war, backing artists like Jane Russell and Bette Davis as they entertained US troops.
Returning to Singapore in 1973, Soliano made waves with the AJL Trio at the Shangri-La Hotel's Peacock Bar, before leading the Louis Soliano Quintet at the popular Hilton clubs in Singapore and Malaysia. He then played percussion with the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra and was a regular feature at the Singapore International Jazz Festival in the ’80s. He has also worked with the stars of the region including Lea Salonga, Roman Tam, Frances Yip and S. K. Poon.
