Description
Lan Shui, conductor Valeriy Sokolov, violin
RACHMANINOV Scherzo in D minor RACHMANINOV Prelude to The Miserly Knight RACHMANINOV The Isle of the Dead, Op. 29 TCHAIKOVSKY Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
26-year-old Ukrainian violinist Valeriy Sokolov joins the SSO and Lan Shui for Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular Violin Concerto in this all-Russian concert. Rachmaninov’s Isle of the Dead is one of the composer’s most powerful orchestral scores, inspired by an atmospheric painting of a small boat approaching an island on a quiet sea. The concert opens with two lesser known early works by Rachmaninov: the Scherzo in D minor and his Prelude to The Miserly Knight.
