Appreciating Art Lecture Series Join us for this lecture series as guest speakers and SAM curators discuss how recent developments in the region's cultural, social and political scenes have shaped Southeast Asian contemporary art, drawing on examples of works from the Singapore Biennale 2013.

Vietnam, Cambodia & Myanmar By Khairuddin Hori and Naomi Wang
Like many Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia have experienced complex and tumultuous pasts. In reaction to their histories and personal encounters, artists have often used contemporary art forms as a means of social critique and to interrogate the status quo. The SB2013 artists from these three countries present a snapshot of the diverse range of artistic practices and approaches across the various contemporary art scenes, presenting viewers with a cogent overview of contemporary art development and evolution in these countries. These artists assume roles of mediation, advocacy and agency in societies, communities and locales, becoming in and of themselves conduits of restoration and change in society.
