Southeast Asian Contemporary Art By Dr. Susie Lingham
In this lecture, SAM Director Dr. Susie Lingham will consider the works presented at SB2013, and how they deepen our understanding of the socio-cultural, economic, aesthetic and ideological complexities of Southeast Asia. There are significant strands emerging in Southeast Asian contemporary art, including art practices in farther-flung cities and rural centres of the region, away from the capitals. While there are resonances in the diversity of cultures and art practices from this region, the voices are distinct, and the polyphonicy at times verges on cacophony. This presentation investigates the connections that hold together these heterogeneous works and cultures as encountered at the Biennale.
