I was given a voucher which gave me a choice for 2 treatments - a 90min essential glow face spa (with stress relieving back massage) or a 45min slimming treatment. I picked the face spa on a Saturday evening at Liat Towers.

1st impression - the first thing I saw was several (about 5-6) staff huddled around the reception discussing things. Not a very welcoming sight. I arrived at 6:05pm for my 6:15pm appointment and went to the washroom and asked to fill up particulars as usual.

Pre-Treatment - I was asked to change my shoes before being led to the treatment room. I was told that my face will be cleansed before being analysed and thereafter the appropriate treatment will be done. But what they meant by 'appropriate treatment' was the appropriate hard selling. And so I was told after being pinched / pulled on the face a few times that my pores are very clogged and stuff that i put on my face / that they will put on my face will be useless. I was highly recommended a champagne enzyme at 'only $68', with the original price at $360. Of course i said no. And so the treatment started.

Treatment - The back massage lasted a grand total of ONE minute. Finished. Then the usual cleansing, extraction, mask, then sleeping. Very slip shoddy work and attitude, almost like they couldnt wait to get rid of me. Okay blame me for not agreeing to pay $68?

Post treatment - I was told I'm done after the mask was cleaned off and saw the time was 7:25pm. When asked for feedback, I told them I was surprised that it ended early. A staff quickly said oh she has to go check my appointment time. Another staff joined in soon, and I was told by both of them that oh I arrived at 6:05pm, and that the 90min includes the consultation, changing of clothes, and etc etc and they state 90min on the voucher because they didnt want customers to feel rushed. They added that the actual facial is around 1 hour...really???? And so I asked about why it says 'deep cleansing' on the description for the face spa - I was told deep cleansing means extraction included. I dont see how deep it was.

I didnt make too much noise as the voucher was given to me free but I did feel cheated and will advise anyone against paying for treatments there as they are not honest in their trade.

      12. CA California

      Category: Deli and Cafe
         Fusilli   Onion rings   Wrap   Mac&Cheese
I shall begin my traumatized review by quoting what CA California says on their website:

"CA* California was inspired by the rustic old-world beauty of Dempsey Hill, reminding the owner of his happy days at California and the fresh unpretentious good food he enjoyed there. In his bid to share that wonderful gourmet experience with Singapore, CA* California was started, capturing the spirit of food that is all Californian casual, laid back and wholesome.

Affectionately called the “Ranch Home” by our fans, CA* California at Dempsey provides customers with a homely and comfortable setting complete with high ceilings, antique brickwork and even a living room area with a faux fireplace where fans can mingle. Above all, CA* hopes to bring that friendly and casual CA-style of service to our customers and regulars with a place where you can find real fuss-free good food and warm friendly service.

From our Sandwich Board to our Grills and Oven menu, each dish was designed not just to be a sure hit with your taste buds but also to make an impact on your soul. We aim to serve food that are simple, unpretentious and fresh as we believe that sauces, salt and pepper should be used in moderation so that the freshness of the food stands out.

Our Ranch Home is designed with an open kitchen concept and we love it as it allows diners to make individual requests and also allows us to engage with them since at CA*, we believe in our philosophy that the kitchen is yours as much as it is ours"

      NOT TRUE.

I made the unfortunate decision to dine here for a Friday dinner due to The Entertainer App vouchers which entitled us to a 1-4-1 main course.

To be fair, when I called to make a reservation (which turned out to be really unnecessary), they did highlight that they had reduced the menu (but please update your website!), but I didnt expect it to be that small a selection - 6 main courses: 3 pastas and 3 wraps a couple of random sides.

Sides - We picked onion rings - $12. About 10 rings obviously from a frozen pack served in a basket with a side of mayonnaise. Crappy value.

Pastas - 2 out of the 3 pastas were cold - fusilli and macoroni 1 hot mac & cheese. Portion was really small for a plate that cost $12.80 and while the accompanying chopped chicken breast and capsicum with dressing were edible, the pasta was strangely very doughy, nothing like what a cold pasta should taste like. Suspected it was frozen and not thawed properly before they popped it in the microwave. So I returned it and asked them to make another one. They came back to say their fusilli are all the same batch so a new order would taste the same (!). They offered to do the same but with macaroni - but same problem again. I returned it again. They offered to exchange it for a wrap.

The Mac & Cheese which the other guys ordered while was the only edible thingy of the night, was very average and very pricey for the $19.90 price tag.

Wraps - I choose the turkey wrap ($12.80) after failing to eat pasta. This was wrong too - cold tasteless wrap with a whole bundle of low-end turkey ham which left me with an overdose of sodium. Left it aside after 2 bites. Accompanying corn chips was a distraction.

Drinks - no happy hour and relatively expensive drinks here - 1 pint of Erdinger at $15.90. In dempsey, that's pricing suicide.

Service - the staff was at least genuinely nice about whether I was able to actually eat that night and said its good to have feedback. However, she also implied that the chef was off that day thus the bad quality (!?). Bad excuse! They didnt have to do any cooking at all: just assemble, deep fry, or mircrowave the hot stuff (we know because the Mac&Cheese came at uneven times and we realized it was because their microwave can only do one portion at a time).

They should really just focus on serving overpriced ice cream.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. FAR FAR AWAY.

I've not tried Mouth Restaurant for a long time and ended up at this outlet after being down on my luck at a couple of Soup Restaurant outlets.

      It was a mistake.

(no pics, sorry for this one!)

Beef tenderloin in bbq sauce ($38) - it was too fatty for us and a really teeny weeny portion for its price. Nothing really bad with the taste but for the price, it needs to be twice as much!

Lotus root, celery, mixed vegetables ($14) - Blandly stir fried together. The lotus roots slices were pathetic and not fresh.

Roast chicken *half)($16) - best dish of the night, with nice crispy skin and a accompanying salt as a condiment.

Salmon Yu Sheng ($49.90) - fresh but again really small for its portion. Tsk tsk.

      Other things we had include: 1x rice @ $1.30, 9x beers @ $9 each, tea @ $2 per pax, towels @ $0.80 per pax.

The total bill was $250 - granted the beers were already $80 but its still a no-no food wise as I simply cannot stomach having so little value for the prices.

There was also a $3.90 promotion stated on its website but the staff there said there was none and that it was only for a specific beer which they didnt have (how convenient). I feedback via their website about this and their manager called back, but only to sound defensive and sarcastic about how I am finding fault with everything he said.

I personally have blacklisted this place.

      14. Ambush (Junction 8)
         15 Aug 2013 at 4:23 pm
Sausage platter   Rosti   Crispy chicken and seaweed - alio olio ambush style   Paella seafood   Baby scallop and flying fish roe
This was a dinner choice for a casual night with some friends and I'm glad I made the decision to book prior - was surprised there was a wait for table on a weekday evening!

The usual Ambush styple for deco but slightly different from its Plaza Sing outlet - casual vibes and wooden furnitutre.

German style potato pancake (rosti) ($7.50) - I liked this as its plain and simple but some commented that it was too thin.

Mini sausage platter ($8.80) - grilled mini chicken garlic and chicken cheese sausage with mustard and brown sauce dip - Good for sharing (and with some beer!) - the sausages were nicely warm from the grilling and goes very well with the mild mustard.

Baby scallop and flying fish roe - squid ink sauce ($14.80) - My main course which I struggled to finish. Plenty of fresh scallops with a heap of linguini which was just nicely al dente for me. Squid ink itself doesnt have any taste but I choose to believe it was healthy - which I read somewhere...but not a good dish for a date!

Crispy chicken and seaweed - alio olio ambush style ($13) - Very good - so much so I wish I had ordered this. The ambush style alio olio was very tasty with mild spicy seasoning, the chicken was not oily and the seaweed sprinkled over the top added a nice taste to the whole dish. Big porton too.

Paella seafood ($14.80) - Slightly disappointing after the excellent pasta dishes. While the seafood was fresh and quite a generous portion, the rice was too soggy for my liking and the tomato sauce tasted just medicore.

Cauliflower soup & ice tea ($5.50) - You can add this to any main course, but I'll advise against it if you get Cauliflower soup like us. No hint of the veg at all - basically we can only tell it's a cream soup, that's all.

Service was quite prompt despite us sitting in a corner. Wil definitley return for their mussels next time!

        15. The Kitchen Table
           15 Aug 2013 at 3:21 pm
        Category: Hotels, International
Chinese station menu   Breads   Indian   Dessert showcase   Seats
I've always wanted to try The Kitchen Table but never had a chance to until I found out that they have a 1-4-1 buffet dinner promotion for SPG members. So my and 3 other frens trotted all the way in - the promotion is only valid for more than 1pair if you have more than 1 SPG membership.

The place was smaller than I thought - seafood, sushi, cold cuts / salads / appetizers, indian, western / pasta, and chinese noodle / soup. And it being a weekday it was not as empty as I thought it would be.

Seafood - a smallish almost hidden counter but fresh seafood. Usual suspects like oysters, prawns, mussels, clams, lobsters were all good.

Cold cuts / appetizers - The salads didnt leave a very big impression on me as they were quite medicore eg tuna, mushrooms salads. But they had about 3 variety of cold cuts including parma ham which were quite nice.

        Indian
        - made to order naans, chicke tikka, curries and lentils etc which were all good.

Pasta - I headed straight for the made to order pastas instead of the handful of western buffet choices - you can basially take your pick of ingredients eg veg, sausages, and type of pasta, then choose the type of sauce you want. Very nice!

Chinese - Soups and noodles available but I only had the soup - Pork rib and winter melon soup which was superb.

Desserts - Very prettily arranged like a showcase of 3 'cabinets' and had rather good variety but quality wise was just okay. Strangely enough, the tiramisu had almost no sponge fingers nor any cocoa powder on top.

Coffee - the buffet comes with coffee / latte / cap / tea - the cap was quite nice and did not taste like it came out of a Nestle machine.

Honestly, I would not have recommended this place without the SPG promotion as I think $65 per pax is too ex for the variety and quality. But paying $33 with the promo is definitely worth it!

And note that their shuttle only allows in-house guests staying with them - dining guests like us will have to find our own way in. You can tak the shuttle out but the last shuttle leaves the hote for Vivo at 9:55pm which seems a bit early.
