We popped into Ayam Penyet Ria at Lucky Plaza because I wanted Malay-style chicken soup. Plus, the food here is cheap.
1) Soto Ayam ($5): The soup was chock full of ingredients, shredded chicken pieces, julienned cabbage, a boiled egg and clear vermicelli, and garnished with sliced fried garlic for extra pungency. This was delectable and easily one of the better versions of soto ayam that I've tried.
2) Ayam Penyet ($6.50): Smashed fried chicken thigh served with blanched kangkong, cucumbers, lettuce, a piece of fried beancurd, soyabean cake and loaded with bits of crunchy chicken batter drippings for extra texture. The chicken was tender and juicy, and we mopped up every last bit of the chicken batter drippings. This came with a kickass sambal chili.
3) Fried Chicken Wings ($6): The chicken wings (3 of them in a portion) were finger-licking good, especially with the sambal
Lucky Plaza is a place for Filipinos like me to hang out, but then was surprised of seeing such a queue in an Indonesian Restaurant in this mall. This curiousness made me went thru this resto and get to taste their famous ayam penyet. And behold... it is really tasty..to the bones! The chilli really bites in the mouth so i took 2 Ice Botol as refreshment. What can i say...its worth the queue!
With the many times I eaten here, i have tried a couple of times taking my meal in bare hands, which i adapt from others eating here. It really made the eating experience more enjoyable.
By word of mouth, I was able to tell my Filipino friends about this fine restaurant and they had the same good eating experience i had. Though its an indonesian resto, it surely captures pinoy's (slang for Filipino) taste.
While ayam penyet is the best seller, must try are their pecel lele, ikaw bawal, beef ball soup, and gado-gado.
After hearing much about the famous Ayam Penyet at Lucky Plaza, finally I went to try it. And there are so many version of Ayam Penyet within the building. I hope I didn't go to the wrong one.
From the photo, you can see the crispiness of the ayam (chicken). The serving size is pretty big and the rice is fragrant too. But for me, having ayam penyet, the most important ingredient is the chili! The more the merrier!
And with just this one plate of Ayam Penyet, and some beef balls, I finished 4 portions of their powerful chili!! I was sweating and feeling the tummy spinning, but I just couldn't stop! I love their chili!
Believe it or not, even though I'm a true Indonesian, the first Ayam Penyet I ate was the one in this particular restaurant. Sorry la, Ayam Penyet does not originate from Jakarta okay! (I come from Jakarta)
And I loveeeee it. I love their big serving! It's really fulfilling and will not run out fast when you're busy talking to your friends. The chilli is so SHIOK! (borrowing Singaporean term) It's really hard to find a good chilli here in Singapore, I tell you. Most of the chilli I find is too sweet or not spicy at all. Bleah. Well, I can understand if genesis ^ can't take the chilli..Singapore's tongue juz can't tolerate hot chilli I guess since there are hardly any spicy chilli here. Hahaha.
I also love their gado-gado! Gado-gado is some kind of salad (since basically they throw in many types of vegetables inside), plus some beancurds and some lontongs (rice) covered with yummy peanut sauce. Oh the glorious peanut sauce. I remember the last time I ate this I was so full I had difficulty to get up from my seat! LOL.
They also serve many interesting beverages. I'm not really keen to drink sweet beverages so usually I only order hot tea. However there's a popular beverage there : Soda Gembira. It literally means "Happy Soda". Hahaha. Won't explain what it is. Just go and try! (and tell me whether you got happy or not =P)
One flaw.. The service staff is sometimes kinda blur and our order sometimes doesn't come out as expected (sometimes food item that's not ours come to our table.. and sometimes food item we ordered doesn't come... -_-). We already tried to explain slowly in Indonesian and English but well.. Blur people.. What to do -_-
However all in all I really like this place! Since Kantin Aneka (a stall in now-closed S21 Food square at Cuppage Road) is now closed, I shall go here for my Indonesian food fix. Homesick, you know!
Never knew Lucky plaza had its fair share of good food, until we stepped into this place. The favourite dish I must say is the Ayam Penyet. This is the first time I ate this dish and it really looked "penyet" if not "punchek". It was smashed up but still recognizable as a chicken thigh. I was expecting some gravy, but there was none. The ayam was fried with indonesian spices and was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
One thing that made me gulp down a glass of water is the sambal that came along with it. I was warned by the friend that the sambal is SUPER hot so I just did a little baby dip into it. But nevertheless, it was still too hot for me. Surprisingly, the friends plate of sambal was wiped dry...
