Loved the glass walls and interior design of the National Museum. Its really a real nice place to go to especially during the weekdays when its not crowded. And enjoy a cuppa at the cafe.
Here's a shot of one part the interior I took inside the building after i'm done with the special exhibition by Mr. Christian Lacroix, the costumier at the Exhibition Gallery 1 and The Canyon. As well as a shot of the newest art-on-site by Indonesian artist Teddy, which you will see it as soon as you step in the entrance of the museum. It will be there from May 2009 to October 2009. And the costumes collection by Mr. Christian Lacroix, will be on till 7th June 2009. Being quite a 'stranger' to fashion stuffs, I was really intrigued after the 1 hour free guided tour. The tour guide was good in describing how the costumes were for and the materials used and why they were used and so on. Its good that I actually went through the tour and understood what it is all about.
The national museum always manage to have real interesting special exhibitions on besides the permanent ones like the 'History' gallery and the 'Living' galleries, located on the 2nd floor.
For visitors, its a must to come to this museum, a day or half a day to walk around the exhibitions. Have fun!

The NSM is seriously a very good place to go to with your family, and even your friends. With the place being revamped into a very modern building just at the back of Fort canning hill, it is much more a better place for your family to have an outing together.
In the new NSM, you can explore the various histories and heritages of the races in Singapore. they even provide you with a stored hearing device to help you understand the various exhibits you are looking at. Just key in the reference number on the device and you will have the explanation of the history of the exhibit. Learning history has never been this fun and simple!
In the NSM, there are also various rooms which specialises in the histories of various aspects of singapore, such as the history and heritage of food in singapore. you can also learn about the history of fashion in singapore in one of these rooms! Talking about the lack of culture in singapore!
In the NSM, you can really get to know more about the history and heritage of Singapore, how our ancestors sacrificed themselves to make Singapore the country it is today! It is really an enriching experience for me. For a musuem, it is truly one you should not shun, as the musuem seriously make your social studies textbook goes 4-dimensional, making learning truly fun and interesting!
Taking that i generally dont like musuems, i must really applaud NSM for making my experience an exceptional one.
Rating: 4/5 (worth going to, apart from being a musuem)

Beautiful building filled with beautiful displays and interactivity for the visitors.
This is the first museum I went which I was given an audio player before entering the exhibition place. (Of course you'll have to return the player before you leave.) And I find that the player is very useful and it helps keep one (if visiting alone) company. Good thing I went with my friends. If not, I would not have the courage to continue the visit on my own. This is one of the most intimidating visit for me to a museum.
The lighting within the museum is dimly lighted and it created an eerie feeling. I had goosebumps when I saw a coffin and the set-up of a funeral ceremony. So scary can?! My friends and I had to fasten our pace and move away from the section.
At the National Museum, there are also many smaller exhibition rooms where you can explore. There was one featuring local food and one on photography too.
If you're planning to go to the National Museum, I recommend you go with a group of friends. And be prepared to spend the entire day there. Lots of things to explore.

Although the building outside looks the same, abeit the renovations and refurbishments done, the interior of the museum is totally brand new and very much different from the National Museum I have been to many years back. The old musuem was eerie, dark and museum like. The new looks refreshing and more like an art gallery.
If you are driving there, you can park at the car park at fort canning park (next to ROM) and enter via the back entrance to the museum. Entrance fees are $10 for adults.
Must say that you can spend the whole day in the Singapore "History Gallery" to look at the exhibits and listen to the cleverly arranged scripts and stories from 1800s to the present. I took about 4 hours to finish the History Gallery (with in-depth concentration).
The "Living Galleries" are equally interesting with topics on fashion, food, wayang and photography. There is one particular section I particularly enjoy: the private collection of photographs of people, their families and scenes of Singapore in the early 1900s.
Although guided tours are available, I recommend taking the self guided audio tour. You will be given an audio set which you can put round your neck, with headphones attached. As you move round the museum, and see an interesting exhibit, just select the appropriate buttons on the audio set and hear the narration and explanation. There is a wealth of information available with this audio set. At times it seems like there is an overload of information.
Much of the exhibits are well preserved. You can find Passports, Japanese occupation documents, birth certificates and marriage certificates that look like they were just written a while ago....although the date says 1923.
Many immigrants came from China to look for a better life in Singapore in the 1920s. It isn't much different today. To think that these ones who came in 1920s for a better future are not longer in existence just makes you feel how short life is. And to think that the present is just as bad as the past, or even worse in terms of world conditions just makes you wonder if it really is possible to find a "better" life in another land. The past events portrayed in the Musuem really makes you think about life as a whole. Much of the Museums's exhibits dwell on the founding of Singapore, the Japanese occupation and the beginning of the political history.
It is also interesting to note that many road names we have today are named by the British in the 1800s. Much of Shenton way, Colleyer Quay, Alexander Road, Bukit Timah, Jurong and Even Tampines and Bedok were on maps dated in the 1800s!
Visiting the museum was an eye opener to people, their thoughts and aspirations. Over the years these have remained unchanged....and I guess will never change.
So if you want to do some soul searching, visit the National Museum. As the saying goes, "Without the past there will be no present".
