Get the Beers and Choco Pudding

This was the location for one of our LA Dinner and Drinks.

    1) Brewed Beers: Very fresh and good. Must try.

    2) Fisherman's Basket ($26), battered scallops, prawns, dory fish served with tartar sauce, mesclun greens and chips. They forgot to put salt on the seafood.

    3) Crispy Blueswimmer Crabcake on Mango and Waterchestnut Salsa ($16): lackluster. It reminded me of a fishcake.

    4) Spinach Ravioli with Gorgonzola with Cream Sauce and Parmesan Shavings ($16): ho-hum affair

    5) Hickory-Smoked BBQ Baby Back Ribs in Beer Marinade ($28) was nicely smoked, but wasn't tender enough.

    6) Crispy Duck Confit Leg with Parmesan Potatoes and Fine French Beans ($28) was one of the better dishes, it was richly flavoured and moist.

    7) Self-Saucing Chocolate Pudding with Vanilla Ice-Cream ($10): absolute MUST TRY.

This is the place where i had my birthday last year.. The food is great... I personally love the Chips.... They are REAL CHIP Slices from a real potato and thats both healthy and yummy.. No preservatives and I won't become a MUMMY.... The Egyptian Mummy i mean. The Burger is also one to die for... succulent beef.. juicy and yummy and the rest on the menu, i love it all.

But besides the food I have to say the ambience is great.... I personally love the string lights..... So Romantic..... One cannot help but want to run your fingers through the lights like you will do the same to your hair... And when you get a little more tipsy.. You might think you will burn your fingers on them... But before you run your hand and bring it near to your face, take cheesy pictures with the lights near to your face..... STOP AND STARE... While you stare think about how many hundreds of patrons already did that and not forgetting their OILY FACES... FINGERS... and whatever.. Not forgetting the Super Pukers who might have already puked on them a thousand times..... THINK,.......

The service is great.. waitress and waiters run around alot.. Not forgetting the occasional handsome waiters..... They are generally helpful and friendly...... and prompt with your request.... especially when you ask for the bill..

The Live Band is great... previously from China Jump at CHIJMES... BOY I STILL MISS THE DENTIST CHAIR.... ALL CHINA JUMP Fans out there...... Jive Talking is HERE...... and the band had changed some of the players but They are still very much their oldselves..... Love the music they play.... Its somewhere between the old and the new... and they have such great groove.. You can't help but will move to the beat..

The crowd is great too.. You see many yuppies and caucasians as well as local hot babes... A must go... for all you love clubbers....

      See you there on fridays......

I consider Clarke Quay (Clarke Quay itself, not like those places around it like Liang Court or Central or Mohamed Sultan) a crappy place to get a good meal. The motto of the restaurants there seem to be exorbitant prices for average food.
We went there at about 8 plus on a Sat night, hoping that we could get a table inside (not just because of the aircon...) but then they were packed. We did get a hugeeeee table outside (which could seat 10).

I was feeling rather stingy and settled for a $16 Chicken Sandwich. This is one of the cheaper dishes on the menu, but it doesn't make it anymore value for money than the rest - it's a normal chicken sandwich (chicken breast, quite a small portion but it's tasty and not too hard) with avocado (yum!) and brie cheese (double yum!) with beetroot on a toasted foccacia bread. Taste wise, it's ok but totally not worth the $18.72. The bread is really thick compared to the filling. The salad on the side was pretty good - it's a sour balsamic vinegar dressing with lots of different kind of leaves (not those with just iceberg lettuce).

My friends who all ate the $28 a main Ribs, Duck Confit and Lamb Shank all came to the conclusion that the mains were not worth it for the portion as well as the hefty price tag. Perhaps it was cos we had a really value for money dinner at Gourmet Plus not too long agon, and our tastebuds had been primed...

The $10 Lemon Tart was only mediocre, but I do have to say the other desesrts are much better (the Sticky Date Pudding and Honey Yoghurt Pannacotta).

The food standard leaves much to be desired, but the whole draw of the place (for me at least) is their live band - Jive Talking, on Saturday nights. Do note that the age limit for Saturdays is 21 for girls and 23 for guys, but 18 on all other days.

Apparently the sunday brunch here's really good... I should come back some time to try it (But I'm usually not even awake for lunch =\)

My friend had her hen night at pump room once.

Firstly, the group of us were late and we left 1 friend waiting for us at the table. I must say the staff was exceptionally nice about this. They entertained her, chatted with her so she wouldn't feel alone and pretty much checked in on her till we arrived.

Foodwise, main courses weren't a big "wow". I've had better..

But the desserts.. oh my god .. the desserts.. ULTRA YUM!
Try the chocolate pudding and that one more.. can't rem what it was, the one with a chock load of berries on top and some caramel in it. Taste and texture similar to youghurt but its like a ga-smillion times better. ITS AMAZING...

Chocolate cake was warm and crisp on the outside.. hot and gooey with chocolate on the inside. Plus the ice cold icecream that you would add to each spoonful of chocolate amazing-ness.. I've died and gone to chick heaven!

The other one.. light, crisp and berri-licious. There was soooooooooo much berries on top that there was actually enuf to go with every spoonful of youghurt caramel thingy. All in all, smoooooooth as silk with a tinge of zing!

Gotta try it to believe it man!

Downside.. they refuse to serve you water after 10pm. So inflexible..

I have an exceptional liking for The Pump Room. Its one our regular hangouts. Most of our nights at The Pump room is just dancing our time away with the witty members of the live band enteraining us. It is located at a really convienient spot and the crowd a yuppies load with a good mix of expats too. Check out The Pump room, maybe u get to see me there:)

I took many pictures of the food and the interior and it is a better experience to read this review with pictures at http://kormmandos.multiply.com/reviews/item/48.

The girlfriend's pals were gracious enough to let me in on their gathering at The Pump Room. So we got there early to get ourselves a table.

For the uninitiated, The Pump Room is a microbrewery and bistro. So we ordered our beers and sides first while we waited for the rest to arrive. We were ushered to a table and presented the menu. I took my time to look through the menu for something that might inspire me...

              Beer

Personally, I prefer dark beers whenever come to a beer place. I have this preconception that dark beers from a place specializing in beers would offer something interesting. Plus dark beers usually meant more dimensions in terms of the flavor, which would be better experience compared the fizzy, foamy, bitter and pale stuff.

I settled for their Scottish ale, a dark beer with a nice taste of roasted malt. It goes down slightly more bitter at first, but ends sweetly.

              Sides

Our appetite was growing as we waited for the others. So we decided to order some sides to keep our mouths occupied. I was disappointed that there wasn't anything like buffalo wings on the finger food menu. The best they could muster were a few potato-based sides and garlic bread. The rest of the table did set their eyes on something else...

Creamy Mashed Potato was pretty good. I did wish there was some bacon crisps mixed into it. Would have been a great combination of textures.

Sauteed Shitake Mushrooms with herbs was nice too. Although it was on the salty side. The chunky garlic was a nice touch which I liked.Still waiting, I decided to entertain myself and the "early-birds" with my camera...

              More of the interior

And the fascinating "optic fibre" lighting which changes color...

              Service

We were rather taken aback when we realized that the staff had failed to inform us about their special offers for their brewed beers. We thought fine, since we never asked. Then we got really annoyed that many of the wait staff were selective of who they wanted to serve. There was this group of Caucasians that took the table in front of us and were given a VIP treatment while the other tables like mine were conveniently neglected and ignored. I then realized the wait staff were consistently tipped by that table for every item served. Talk about spoil market!

But I guess I shouldn't harp on that. I mean, there are other stuff to be peeved by. Like the wait staff's snail-like and begrudging response times for plain water. It seems like they convenient forget your requests. Not like we won't order other stuff, right?

              Main Courses

I found the Linguine with Prawns, Mussels, Scallops and Squid Aglio Olio style was pleasantly spicy with black peppercorns. The seafood was fresh done just right, with the exception of the mussels which were really raw. I think it is because we are so used to the well-cooked mussels in chilli.

One can hardly go wrong with The Pump Room's Special Steak Burger with Salad and Chips. But it does lack the necessary punch to live up to its "Special" status.Beer-Battered Pacific Dory with Chips, Tartare Sauce and Mesclun Saladwas nothing special, though the chips were pretty good.

My order was the Hickory smoked BBQ Baby Back Ribs in Special Beer Marinade. It was a rather standard and ordinary quality. nothing to shout about.

The verdict for mains collectively would be somewhere between mediocre and average.DessertsThe plan had been to stay to catch the live band perform. So we needed to "buy ourselves some more time" in the form of desserts.

The Warm Chocolate Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream was fantastic! The warm, thick chocolate pudding was probably oven toasted to achieve a crispy outer crust with a slightly charred taste. Every mouthful of the thick melted chocolate and the crispy crust was a luxurious experience.

Soft Centered Pavlova with Tropical Fruits and Passionfruit Curd was a light, zesty dessert thanks to the fruits involved at the sides. Pretty enjoyable if you just love the sugar. Personally, I found it a little too sweet, but nevertheless, it had a good mix of textures to be experienced with every little bit placed into the mouth.

There is a sudden realization that one can't really go wrong with a Cheese Platter. With very distinctive textures and tastes, it will instantly turn one into a cheese connoisseur.

By the time we wipe off everything on the plates, the band started their act. Plenty of 80's and 90's music to dance the night away.

Last but not least, the toilet was pretty decent, a good thing to have with all the booze going around.
