BonGoût, which means “Good Taste” in French, is surprisingly a Japanese second-hand bookstore and a café located at the cosy and tranquil corner of Robertson Quay since 2000.

First started out in UE Square, one can enjoy their freshly brewed coffee or daily special menu and indulge in Japanese publications like books, magazines and Manga (Japanese comic books) at your own leisure.

This is an absolute haven for all “Otakus” wannabe!!! And fret not if you do not read the Japanese language, for there are tons of Japanese fashion magazines to refer for the latest trend and style.

With rows and rows of publications, along with simplistic décor, what HFB like about this place is the unpretentious character it oozed. Did HFB also mention that Robertson Quay is one of the perfect spot for a peaceful and quiet lunch?

As always, one of the speciality home-styled Japanese cuisines would be their curry rice. As such, HFB ordered a small portion of Beef Curry Rice ($9.00) – and leave to regret it somehow.

Serving wise, it was definitely diminutive – HFB counted a total of 3 bite-sized pieces of beef plus a few tiny bits on his plate along with heaps of Japanese sweet curry and rice. Taste wise it was above average but price wise, HFB thought it was over-the-top for the amount of meat one gets.

If HFB had known, he would be paying an additional dollar for the big portion (but then again, he wonders how many more insignificant pieces of meat he might get for that?).

HFB is happy to announce that a new Astons Specialities has finally come to TOWN and is located at The Cathay Building!

With its simple wood-based furbishing and its signatured chalkboard indicating the Special of the Day, HFB couldn’t resist himself but be tempted by the promotion screaming WAGYU RIBEYE Grade 5/6 - $38.90nett [including 2 side dishes] and end up ordering it along with Sweet Corn and Coleslaw.

The sweet corn patted with butter was satisfyingly sweet – love it! As for the coleslaw, I would prefer the cut of the veggies be thinner, but otherwise it was normal.

Grilled to a perfect charred on the outside and medium rare on the inside, what sets this wagyu ribeye apart from the normal ribeye is the tenderness of the meat - marbled with monounsaturated fats; the natural juices that gushed out with each chew were such a delight! Also, the lingering tint of sweetness on the palate was pure enjoyment.

But coming back to reality, HFB wasn’t fully satisfied with 200gm of meat, and he was harbouring over his dining partner’s Prime Ribeye X’tra Cut ($16.50nett) that was much thicker and bigger.

Besides nicely cooked to medium rare, what HFB found lacking in the wagyu, was ironically satisfied by the X’tra Cut – the “Beefy” taste!

A personal preference, HFB believes a beef should taste like beef and that was somehow missing from the wagyu, or perhaps he is just not used to eating wagyu.

Took part in the recent Prego - Spaghetti & Meatball Eating Challenge. Nestled in Fairmont Hotel Singapore, Prego is a contemporary, chic restaurant that serves hearty authentic Italian fare. The restaurant is huge with high ceilings and easily seats more than a 100 pax - a place ideal for both business dining and large group gatherings.

Although my plate of meatball spaghetti was gobbled down in a space of 4mins and 05secs, HFB was able to taste the very smooth pasta sauce and al dente pasta. The tomato based sauce didn't come across as too heavy - which HFB likes it a lot!

Due to the eating challenge reasons, the meatballs were made slightly harder than usual, so HFB is not going to comment of the texture of the meatballs. But what I like is the "beefy" taste of the meatballs, yet not overwhelming. They charged $12nett for the competition and the actual retail price of the pasta is $25 .

While his dad, Mr Tang Chai Chye inherited his late father's Teochew Bak Chor Mee recipe in 1975. The son laid his hands on it 3 years ago in 2005, and opened his own Tai Wah Pork Noodle stall at Hong Lim Food Centre.

While the older Tang claims that the secret to his noodles lies in the quality of his black vinegar, I dare dispute that it is their noodles that did the trick. Slightly thicker than the usual Mee Kia we are familiar with, the springy bite and silky texture is so consistent that one can end up slurping just the noodles alone to be satisfied.

With plenty of ingredients – Minced Pork, Pork Ball, Pig Liver, and Sliced Pork – in a $4 bowl of noodles, one cannot help but to fall in love with this bowl of noodles, or so I thought, until I had a sip of the soup and a bite of the Teochew Keow, or Dumpling. The Dumpling Soup ($4) was virtually tasteless with a smidgen of “water” taste – it was diluted and lacked of flavour. The dumpling was also slightly undercooked, with the skin still slightly firm – but the saving grace was the Fried Sole Fish that is found within it that gives it an extra vivacity.

Given time, Tai Wah Pork Noodle @ Hong Lim might dislodge Ah Kow Mushroom Minced Pork Mee from its standings with its superior supply of noodles, but the lacked of an experienced pair of hands (pay attention to their quick flicks of wrist with every step) means HFB still flavours the legend dispute its recent decline.

The National Park to visit in Araluen during the Spring Season during the Aug/Sept period. Various plant species and numerous colours of Tulips will greet you from the start to finish - definitely a delight for the ladies!

Swing by Swan Valley, another popular tourist destination nearby, and 45mins drive from the city to visit the various wineries. Do give the Caversham WildLife Park a visit and get to hug the Wombat for a photoshoot & feed the Kangaroos! Over there, you can stop by at Duckstein, a German Brewery for lunch and sample their Pork Chops and Beer.

Do give the Viet food in Northbridge/Chinatown a try, especially their Beef Noodles and Pork Chop rice. The most popular outlet among the many there is Viet Hoa. Do note that Dim Sum is also a popular activity among the Asians on weekends for lunch in this area too.

At night, drive down to Millpoint, South Perth, a 10 minutes drive from city and enjoy 50% discount on Tuesday at the Oyster Bar. Take a stroll down the riverbanks and head off to Ciao Italia just 5 mins away at 273 Mill Point Rd for their famous Italian delight and its signatured Tiramisu.

The one dish you must not missed in Perth is the Chilli Mussels. Located at the corner of Miller Street and Shepperton Road near Vic Park, Albany Highway is probably the undisputed Conca's, that serve the best chilli mussels you will ever try!

Of course, you can visit Burswood Casino, Margaret River, etc., but I shall leave those touristy places for the other tourist bureaus' website to touch on!
