There are two outlets located within a few metres of each other. One is a traditional coffeeshop setting, on the street corner, while a second outlet serves the same menu in airconditioned comfort. Both command long queues especially in the evenings.

We chose the aircon outlet as it was a hot evening, and were ushered to a table further inside the store. It was rather crowded that night, and it soon became quite stuffy where we were sitting.

We ordered the standard fare of Bak Kut Teh ($6.50 menu price) and side dishes of Braised Pig Trotters ($6.00), Preserved Vegetables ($1.20) and Dough Fritters/youtiao ($1.00).

The soup was nice and peppery, the pieces of pork ribs were quite tender, and falling off the bone. Most importantly, the wait staff were very attentive to keep topping up our soup bowls with piping hot broth.

The prices were a little different from the menu (probably because we were in the aircon outlet) but the food quality and attentive service more than made up for the difference.

    Definitely worth another visit.

Pineapple Rice   Phad Thai   Prawn Pancake   Lemongrass and Sour Plum drinks
Tucked away in the basement of the mall, this nondescript restaurant serves the usual Thai food we are all familiar with. I called ahead and was told that they only accept reservations for four and above. Staff were attentive enough to call us to reconfirm our reservations, so we assumed that they were very full. When we arrived, only four tables were occupied, and they were practically empty on a Sunday evening!

We ordered the usual fare of Phad Thai (as part of a coupon promotion) and also a Pineapple Rice. Both turned out to be really small portions, had few ingredients and was very lightly seasoned to the extent of being very bland and flavourless.

Our Lemongrass and Sour Plum drinks, on the other hand, were very very sweet and had to be watered down twice. Flavourful to start out with, though.

Staff were rather attentive (although being almost empty probably accounted for their prompt service). They were also courteous and helpful.

Verdict: Perhaps we'd give this outlet a miss for more established restaurants which offer slightly more expensive but flavourful and more authentic Thai dishes.

Interior   Well-patronised!   Two pieces of plain thosai with accompaniments   Two pieces of plain prata with dahl curry
We chanced upon this quiet little Indian coffeeshop while we were driving around the foot of Mount Faber. Located just opposite two busy churches (Grace and Telok Ayer Methodist Churches) on a Sunday, it was rather busy today, according to the cashier.

Still it is difficult to imagine this eatery really crowded, as it is located off the main road, along the quiet Morse/Wishart Road area. Street parking is readily available along this quiet road.

The food was quite standard and at the usual (some say cheap) prices. We tried the plain thosai ($1.20 per piece) and plain prata ($0.80 per piece) to satisfy our peckishness.

The breads are served on traditional pieces of brown paper (like the type we packet chicken rice in) and the servers readily provide cutlery as well as huge containers of accompaniments (coconut, dahl, fish curry) to go with the bread. For a truly authentic feel, do eat with your fingers and dollop a little of every sauce provided on the paper. Use the pieces of crispy prata to sop up the sauces and remember to lick your fingers for absolute satisfaction! Two sinks (with hand soap) are provided for customers' convenience, so get those digits dirty!

The two servings of both thosai and prata were substantial enough to fill our stomachs, washed down with a good swig of teh ahlia (ginger tea).

Verdict: staff were very polite, helpful; food was reasonable and the whole ambience of the eatery was one of comfort, rustic, kampong-vibe. Good to visit after a walk along the Southern Ridges/Mount Faber!

Interior   Rack of Lamb   Tenderloin Steak   Ribeye Steak   Mixed Grill
We were given a Granton promotional card which offers one-for-one main courses at the Singapore Flyer outlet. Decided to give it a try one hazy evening.

Definitely a sports-bar going by the decor of sports memorabilia. The restaurant was depressingly empty on the evening that we visited, with fewer than six tables occupied. We were shown to a table at the front near the stage (luckily no band was playing).

We ordered the Tenderloin Steak ($33) Ribeye Steak ($29) Rack of Lamb ($29) Mixed Grill ($35), all meats to be cooked to medium doneness. All mains are served with baked potato, corn-on-the-cob and grilled tomato.

The tenderloin came well-done, was tough and hard to cut. We brought this to the attention of the very pleasant male manager and he immediately brought it back to be replaced. He was most apologetic and promised to serve the portion within ten minutes. True to his word, he replaced the tenderloin quickly, and checked back with us again to ensure it was done to our liking. However, this time, the cut of tenderloin was very sinewy and fibrous, and hard to chew. It was however, cooked to the specified medium doneness. We decided to give up trying.

The ribeye was very thinly-cut, so while it was medium-done, the thinness of the portion resulted in doneness throughout the whole piece. Dry and tough and not appetising.

The mixed grill comprised a thin slice of chicken, a few pieces of nice crispy bacon, one lamb shop, one prawn and small piece of striploin. The chicken and strip were dry, the lamb was very rare and bleeding (although we had specified medium doneness).

The rack of lamb was nice, with the correct doneness, tender and flavourful. The accompanying mint sauce (you have to specifically ask for it!) added a nice foil to the saltiness of the lamb.

Generally, the portions were small compared to the prices they were charging. Even with the one-for-one promotion, all four main courses were a little over-priced. The small portion sizes may also have resulted in difficulty in controlling the doneness of the meat.

Our disappointing experience at the restaurant was salvaged only by the professionalism, courtesy and empathy of the male manager. However, we doubt if we would come back anytime soon for a revisit.

(Our O'Leary's receipt was valid for a $2 discount off coffee at Robert's Coffee@Popeye's, just opposite O'Leary's. Coffee was quite good, and the ice-cream is now on promotion 2 scoops for $2.)

               Soup, drink, dessert   Grilled Fish
Seems to me that the quality of food and service at Hans has been gradually going down, even as the prices creep higher.

Visited the Suntec branch today for lunch and was attended to by the cashier, served by a waitress, both of whom did not smile, much less attempt to be welcoming. Maybe that's to be expected at a cafeteria.

Ordered two sets of Grilled Fish ($9.80) which comes with soup, slice of toast, dessert and a drink. If I remember, prices used to be about $2 less for a set? Hmmm......

Let's start with the soup "Cream of Vegetables" which was thick and starchy, with little lumps of thickener (flour?) stirred in. Very little evidence of vegetables in it, perhaps it was well pureed, or just cooked in vegetable broth.

Toast was soggy and rubbery, having waited impatiently for our arrival, whilst sitting in a drawer. Chewy too, with a slight hint of garlic.

Iced Lemon Tea was cloudy, which seems to be a natural reaction between the acidity of the lemon, with the tannin in the tea. That's the theory. Funny that I haven't seen this elsewhere.

            Finally the main course arrived.
Protein: It was immediately evident that the grilled fish was panfried instead of grilled as there were no grill-marks, and it was oily. Slight pressure with a fork would release a small riverlet of oil. The fish was very thin, which explained why it was also slightly overcooked.
Vegetable side: Small helping of coleslaw (achar-style) which was a little too tangy/sour.
Carbohydrate: The hashbrown that came with the fish had spent too long in the oil, crispy but oily with every bite.
Dessert: Served (or rather you pick it up) with the soup and toast, was a very unexciting small peach half in syrup, which looked like it had come straight out of the can. Served in a little plastic cup! Would have preferred a slice of their famous cakes instead.

            Not a very value-for-money experience, I'm afraid.
