Location: Tucked away in a quiet corner of Lavender/Jalan Besar is this quaint little cafe that sells the most delectable pies. It's getting quite well known as the weeks go by, so it can be quite crowded on all evenings.
Parking: Limited street parking in front of the cafe, but you can park at the Jalan Besar Stadium/Swimming Pool MSCP opposite the cafe.
Service: Staffed by upbeat, friendly young people who are very passionate about what they sell. Very willing to go through the entire pie range with you, just to select something that you will like. Good follow-up service too!
Food: They do serve a limited savoury menu which we did not try, mainly because we think of this place as an after-dinner coffee place. Limited seating, so people who linger over dinner will occupy tables for a longer time. The selection of pies is good enough for us.
Menu: Refer to their website for selection of sweet pies or drop by and the friendly staff will tell you more.
Pricing: Reasonably priced, $12-15 per person for a slice of pie (which can be shared) and coffee/tea.

Somehow makes the entire dining experience more authentic when you look out and see all the Thai people milling around doing their shopping, and the loud Thai music blaring from the loudspeakers and from the pubs upstairs.
Seating: Suitable for families, there are large round tables that take 10-12 diners comfortably. There are also smaller square tables for couples.
Ambience: Very cosy, with lots of friendly smiling staff. A huge backdrop featuring padi fields makes the place feel like a village foodshop in Thailand.
Pricing: Reasonable, about $10-15 per person with drinks
Flavours and taste: Authentic Thai cuisine, better than those you get at foodcourts or foodstalls. Spicy, sour are predominant tastes. Server will be able to advise how spicy some dishes are. Must-try steamed seabass (lemon sauce, but ask for less chilli). Fresh and meaty with good balance of sour and spicy, thanks to the little chilli padi. Great tasting broth!
After dinner: Head upstairs to explore the Thai supermarket, or chill out in one of the many pubs/karaoke bars.

Room: Large, clean, tastefully-furnished. Good firm mattress and pillows, stylish dressing table. With coffee/tea-making facilities. Toilet with standing shower, bathroom amenities provided; newspaper, slippers provided
Security: CCTV along the corridors, keycard access; room door beeps if not closed properly
Restaurant: Coffee-house on 1st floor is quite basic, buffet breakfast was not available during our stay, instead we were offered choice of local (nasi lemak) and American (eggs and ham) set breakfast. Very basic.
Ambience: Beppu has moved from its previous location across the street to this outlet. The environment is still roughly the same: cool, cozy and dim (which offers respite from the fierce sunshine outside). There is a good number of long tables, which is great for office lunches.
Service: The waitstaff are pleasant, helpful and courteous. Our server didn't have to do much as we already knew what we wanted to eat, but he did offer us drinks from the beverage list.
Food: We came specifically for the Paper Pot range of dishes, which offers a personal stone pot of bubbling soup stock crammed full of ingredients. At first glance, the paper pot seems to be quite empty but when you dig down (gently!) you will appreciate the generous amounts of napa cabbage at the bottom of the bowl. Accompanied by slices of carrots, shiitake mushroom and golden mushroom, the cabbage gently boils and softens at the base, while the main ingredients, in our case, seafood (two mussels, one prawn) take centrestage. Also available with sliced beef, chicken, mushroom or salmon.
Served with a bowl of rice and a small portion of pickles, the set is surprisingly filling. A thoughtful touch is a small pot of stock to top-up the bubbling bowl. Affordable at just $15.80
Drinks: There is a small drinks list available, but we opted for the free-flow of hot or cold green tea with a slice of lemon ($2) which was a refreshing balance to the steaming steamboat.
Ambience: The outlet is a casual, diner concept, with tables and bar seats arranged around the service area. Snag a seat at the bar and watch the cooks in action, preparing fragrant and delicious meals with ease.
Service: The casual waitstaff are friendly and efficient. You are shown to your seat and given a simple menu and ordering chit which you fill up, then walk to the cashier to make payment. Pick up some serviettes and chopsticks on the way back. Condiments are on the table.
Food: We were there for a light dinner, so we decided on the Beef Combination Hanoi Pho ($9.90). Our food arrived within ten minutes piping hot. The noodles were tender and smooth, with generous portions of beef steak slices, beef balls, beef shank, tendon and honeycomb tripe. Lip-smacking good!
Menu: Other dishes we'll return to try are the Hanoi Pho (from $7.90 to $16.90) and other classic Vietnamese noodles from Southern and Central Vietnam (from $7.90 to $13.90) and their fabulous-looking Banh Mi ($5.90)
