    Authentic Italian Canteen

    Prego's just revamped its menu on 22 February 2010. Only the pasta selection has changed a fair bit, the rest are about the same. Best of all, prices have mostly stayed the same. They probably changed the menu in accordance with the seasonal pickings.

    1) Minestrone di Verdure e Legumi ($15), rustic and hearty mixed vegetable tomato-based soup. Very good.

    2) Zuppa di Funghi con Bianca e Olio Tartufato ($15), cream of mushroom soup with truffle oil and bianca garnish. This was really good, creamy and rich and full of mushroomy-goodness

    3) Risotto al Funghi Porcini e Bottoncini con Spinaci
    ($33), a traditional Italian rice dish with sauteed porcini and button mushrooms and spinach. This was lusciously creamy and incredibly delicate.

    4) Maccheroncelli all Amatriciana ($24), short tube pasta tossed with pancetta, onion, chili and tomato salsa. The pasta is made fresh in Prego's kitchens daily, which explains the evident freshness of the perfectly al dente pasta. I'm not a fan of tube pasta, but this was very yummy. Especially the sauce and pancetta.

    5) Porcini e Gamberi ($27), wood-fired thin-crust pizza topped with porcini mushrooms and prawns. I loved how light and crispy the pizza was. This is one pizza that you'll be guaranteed to finish the crust.

      Authentic Italian in a Quaint Shophouse

      Ate there for one of our LA Lunches. It's a small place so reservations are a must.

      1) Must-tries:
      -Portobello al Forno ($24), oven baked portobello mushroom with taleggio and baby spinach;
      -Carpaccio di Manzo ($24) was a wonderful marriage of paper-thin raw beef tenderloin, bitter rucola and salty shaved parmesan;
      -Tagliaetelle al Granchio ($26), homemade egg pasta ribbons with crabmeat, tomatoes, cream and vodka;
      -Tagliolini Verdi alla Paolo ($25) was a fragrant and delicious spinach pasta with ham, mushrooms, cream and gratin with parmesan
      -Fettuccine ai Funghi Porcini ($25), flat ribbons of egg pasta with porcini, cream and herbs, was a heady concoction of aromatic porcini mushrooms
      -

      2) Good
      :
      -Insalata Caprese ($16) was an Italian mainstay salad of fresh buffalo mozzarella, sweet juicy tomatoes and mesclun greens drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and garnished with sweet basil strips;
      -Insalata di Spinaci con Prosciutto Crudo e Melone ;
      -Minestrone
      ;

      3) Don't try:
      -Calamari Fritti (rubbery);
      -Cream of Mushroom ($12) (too thin and watery);
      -Linguine alla Vongole ($24) (sandy clams)

        Perfect for Impressing Your Business Associates

        This was a celebratory lunch treat from The Boss for winning a suit.

        1) Bread Basket, consisting of Mini Baguettes, Cranberry Bread, Cranberry Biscotti and a Wholewheat Biscotti, which were fluffy and warm, always a plus. These arrived with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip, chili flakes for a subtle heat and a cube of softened butter. The cranberry bread and biscotti were a hit, they had a nuanced sweetness which complimented the olive oil.

        2) Risotto with Herbs and Fricassee of Mushrooms ($26) served with delicately spicy Spanish romesco sauce was my favourite dish of the mains. It was creamy, rich and lip-smackingly good. The risotto was portioned just right as well.

        3) Braised Pork Belly with Apple and Cider Sauce ($42), with galette of potato and Iberico ham was meltingly tender. The sweetness of the braised pork belly was perfectly balanced by the tartness of the apple cider sauce. The potato blanket, crisp on the outside, yet soft on the inside and so comfortingly familiar.

        4) Roasted Lamb Rack from New Zealand ($46), served with a rosemary oil and garlic confit sauce was a well done classic. The lamb was fresh and sweet, devoid of any gamey taste, which I appreciated

          Dim Sum the Old-School Pushcart Trolley Way

          Overall, the dim sum was just so-so. But it was cheap, which made the lunch a lot more palatable. There were only 3 items that were memorable.

          1) Roasted Duck ($18). This was juicy, succulent

          2) Prawn Rice Roll (most dim sum dishes are from $3 to $3.50), silky soft rice rolls with sweet crunchy prawns slathered with a soy marinade

          3) Century Egg Congee, the porridge was smooth and delicate. I loved the crackers on top.

          4) Ordinary: Siew Mai, Har Gow, Deep Fried Prawn Wrapped in Beancurd Skin, Roasted Pork and Bbq Pork, Steamed Glutinous Rice Wrapped in Lotus Leaf

          5) Not Good: Steamed Bbq Pork Buns, Steamed Yam Cake

            Authentic Quality Western Food Made Accessible and Affordable

            Happy Chef is the one place the masses would flock to for cheap but authentic and quality western food. The chef apparently learned the intricacies of the culinary trade in Australia while he was living in the Land Down Under with his family, and luckily for us, he came back to our sunny island and opened up a stall selling fairly upmarket quality western chow at heartland prices.

            1) Farmer's Chicken ($5), grilled chicken thigh slathered in a rich mushroom gravy and served with vegetables. We opted to do away with the fries (in keeping with a healthier regime). I like that Happy Chef doesn't serve the usual crappy baked beans and coleslaw, but serves fresh vegetables instead, carrots, french beans and cabbage blanched and lightly salted

            2) Country Baked Fish
            ($6), which is basically the fish version of the farmer's chicken. I liked that the dory fish is delicate, fresh and light. Chili flakes are added for some spice on the garlic bread, which is an unusual but welcome touch

            3) Teriyaki Fish
            ($6). I liked that the dory fish was fresh, sweet and flaky

            4) Teriyaki Chicken ($6), grilled boneless chicken thigh marinated in a teriyaki sauce, generously topped with mushrooms and served with blanched carrots, cabbage and french beans.
