10 Reviews for “Botak Jones (Ang Mo Kio)” - Restaurants
i was attracted to try out their lengendary botak burger after seeing many reviews and photos of my friends having the super 3 layers of beef patty botak burger. it just seemed so good to me.
even though i did not encounter any long queues like my friends have warned me, it took quite a while for the food to arrive. if my memory didnt fail me, a normal botak burger with just one beef patty starts from about $6 or $7.
additional toppings like extra cheese, bacon, mushrooms etc will be additional of $1 to $3. for my dinner of a normal burger with greedy toppings added, it easily cost up to $12 or $13.
id say their burger is quite satisfying given that the portion is quite big and pretty tasty. the beef was just presented in the way i imagined it to be, tender and juicy. id easily choose this over carls junior. but you know, having spent $12 on a dinner in a kopi tiam just makes me feel 'overspent'. n i think with the same price i could have gotten the same thing in a decent restaurant.
im still a supporter of botak jones but it seems to me like its only me who fancy their burgers but the people im with will always order fish n chips.
their fries are okay, slightly overrated and its no longer free top up (okay, i know thats like decades ago) but i personally like the cheese potato, and i think its a better choice as a side dish when compared to their fries.
in all, i like it! in fact, i am still craving for it now as im writing this. but its not worth me purposely making a trip down to any branches just to have it. its more of a 'oh i passed by, why not?'

The botak jones ang mo kio outlet has already shifted to Block 529 at Ang Mo Kio Ave 10. You can check out their website for more outlets. The food needless to say is always fantastic. Just want to share my experience at this Ang Mo Kio outlet. As you know the preparation for the food takes very long. As my order was a takeaway order and we have to wait very long and guess what? The chef actually prepared a bowl of soup for me and my hubby whom are waiting for our food. The bowl of soup has some rice in it and some hotdog. Although it taste something new to me and my hubby. But both of us find the staff there very thoughtful. With the current economy, besides going to the nice restaurants out there to dine might as well “tabao” (takeaway) the wonderful botak jones food home and enjoy it at home :)

It is a great bargain for ordering western food as the amounts are very big and the quality of the food is commendable. Though it is located at e coffee shop, the service are laudable as the waiters are helpful and friendly. What sets this western food restaurant from its counterparts is that the names given to the food are unique and funny and there are even interesting articles and facts placed on the table for its customers to read while waiting for the food to arrive. However, since the servings are huge, people tend to get sick of the food easily and leading to food wastage. Overall, it is highly recommended.

As requested, an extremely overdue post on Botak Jones. Personally, i have been there at least 5 times over the past 1.5 years and each time with a different group or by myself. So this is more or less a collective experience post. (PS: pardon the horrible pictures. The food looks much better when you are there.)
Located in a humble coffee shop setting in the middle of nowhere in Ang Mo Kio, i was apprehensive at first during my first visit. This however, gave way to appreciation as the prices were definitely lower then its restaurant counterparts. Along the same vein as Aston's and Blackboard, Botak Jones was probably one of the pioneers in this field (correct me if i'm wrong please). Now, after four years, Botak Jones boasts a total of 6 outlets and a strong following of loyal customers with new ones born everyday. Be warned that if you arrive late for the meal, be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes for your food.
The Double Botak ($9.50) - Botak burger, 2 150 gram beef patties set atop a lightly toasted bun with tomatoes onions and lettuce. The burger comes without cheese or any such toppings unless ordered, toppings are priced between $1 to $3.50 on top of charge for the burger. I recommend the cheddar cheese topping for a more wholesome taste. As you can see, the burger i ordered did not come with cheese because i conveniently forgot. The patties are as i remember it, moist and medium well done on the inside which oozes a pleasantly strong beefy taste. The patties were smaller then i remembered however, and it was a little drier then my previous visits for some reason, the lack of cheese also took away a significant portion of enjoyment. The fries were thick and came with chilli powder sprinkled over it.
Cajun Chicken ($7.50) - Having never ordered anything apart from Botak Burger, i was pleasantly surprised with the Cajun Chicken my dad ordered. Chicken breast thats tender, a novel concept and well executed. The chicken was tender, juicy, easily cut and full of flavor from the mozeralla cheese and the spicy cajun sauce. Thats my impression from the one piece i had, my dad enjoyed it and said it was good. Enough said.
Fish And Chips ($6.50) - The humble fish and chips or breaded fried fish, available everywhere and at low prices, how does their rendition fair? Supposedly made from pacific dory fish and breaded on the day itself, they tout it as being freshly made daily. The reality of it is that it still tastes generic albeit a much better one then those available in other hawker centers or coffee shops. This one beats Blackboard's rendition hands down. The fish was thick and sweet with a thin layer of batter, still, would be better if they gave even bigger servings.
"Damn good food at a damn good price!" is their tag line. From my visits, i got to realize that prices have been increasing and the food quality, though decent, have been sliding. The beef is where its at for me, but as prices increase ($1 for cheddar cheese?), the previous good value it offered is slowly offset as it now rivals restaurant prices when toppings are considered. Add the unpleasantness of its long wait times and somehow, the feeling of satisfaction it previously offered somehow ebbs away. Still, for its theme of American burgers, its currently still the better of the lot. Still, its more edging towards "Decent American burgers at semi decent prices" as opposed to what its tag line suggests.

My bf n i tried the Cajun Chicken, Fish & Chips and BBQ Chicken wings. We had high hopes for it as the coffeshop was quite packed and every table ordered Botak Jones.
The Cajun chicken was tough and dry. The BBQ chicken wings were very dry too. I think they were overcooked.
The Fish and Chips was slightly warm. Definitely not hot. The outer layer was hard , not crispy.
I definitely will not patronise it again. Of course this is my personal opinion.

Decent price of $6/- for a sizeable plate of fish and chips. I think that’s pretty cheap with generous amount of fries and fresh coleslaw.
As claimed by the owner, all food are prepared only when ordered by customers. So dory fish not fried and salad not mixed until an order is accepted. Hmm.. this maybe the explanation why the long waiting time especially during peak hours.
We ordered their famous fish & chips, Italian pork sausage and Australian rib-eye steak ( which was very well marinated and served with few bottles of various sauces to compliment the steak ).
Service was considered good since we were eating at a coffee shop. The staff were friendly, attentive and very professional like the ones working in restaurants.
Cutlery are nicely placed in front of you and when they served the food, they take the trouble to ask and served it personally if it was your order.
They even noticed my young niece and came back with an extra smaller plate and a set of cutlery for my niece to share the food. All that was done without us asking for a spare plate!
Well, prices are justifiable considering the big portion of food served. We will definitely come back again.....

Outlet visited: AMK
Ordering and waiting times:
When the outlet was first opened in AMK, the crowd was still ok, you order at the counter and the food was served within like 15mins or so.
Now, after much media exposure, the waiting time had be streeetccccch to 45 mins or more. And that doesn't include the QUEUEING time to place the order. I would say maybe 20 mins or so to queue to order? So you gotta prepare at least 1 hour to wait. Dun go with a growling stomach!
Food:
I never fail to order the steaks there. Ribeye is good! Cajun chicken was the must order for my friend. Fries are usually very generously given. Portion of the food was big, as compared to normal coffeeshop/ market portions.
Food served are usually piping hot, but there was once, they sorta waited for all our orders to be ready then served, and one of our main was cold already =( but overall still good.
Service:
Service is very good, staffs are very polite!
Pricing:
Considered expensive for coffeeshop. But portion similar to cafes, and i think the price is considered medium range. Can comfortably feed 2 person for less than $30.
4 stars for the service and food!
