Crystal Jade is really becoming more materialistic, even a glass of water costs $0.30 now. Its food portion seem to have become smaller too even if the price remains the same.

It is also totally lacking in ambience & decor. Throughout the years it never seemed to have revamped the place. The plates used are always the same old white ones. In terms of decor, I think the Soup Restaurant & Din Tai Feng certainly surpass Crystal.

But yet despite all its drawbacks, it is the only Chinese restaurant chain that offers Hong Kong Dim Sum & Chinese dishes, that most will find palatable. Its pricing is fairly reasonable for a restaurant, its causal atmosphere too, maybe an advantage for those preferring causal Chinese dining.

Recently its menu has undergone some revamp, apart from its usual dishes, it has also come up with set meals for 2 or more people. Also its also has combo sets where 2 dishes are sold together for a lower total price. For example it now has Peking Duck along with another dish, going at about $50. Furthermore there are also some new dishes like sliced ablone with mushroom & etc, cooked in a claypot, sold at $18.

Its Dim Sum are also worth trying.

I went to this outlet on a few occasions, but this time it wasn’t the best of occasions. I had one of my worst dining experience in terms of service. Today I went there together with 2 of my friends. I haven’t had any meal for the day so I was already feeling gorgeously hungry.

All in all, I had waited for more than 30 minutes and my order has yet to be served. My 2 friend’s orders had already been served and yet my order of Ee Fu Noodle with shredded meat in spicy sauce has not been served. I felt bad that my friends waited for me to tuck in together even when I told them to go ahead.

I asked one of the supervisor in-charge about my order, and said she would check my order. Instead, she blatantly walked off to serve other customers and failing to keep to her words. Infuriated, I called upon the manager and demanded my food to be served. Finally some response came and nobody in the restaurant realises that my order has been omitted even though it was keyed into the POS.

I simply don’t understand why it takes so long to whip up a Ee Fu Noodle than the Congee and Wanton Mee that my friends ordered, and why can such mistake be made even when the order is keyed into the system clearly. In the end I changed my order to a Noodle with minced meat and mushroom served with spicy sauce after the manager could not assure me that my order can be served immediately.

To put in words, it tasted sour (like overnight food) as if it was done in haste and the portion was much smaller than the Wanton Mee. I called the manager and told her I would not pay the service charge for total dissatisfactory experience.

Really bad experience and will boycott this outlet. I would never had thought that renowned Crystal Jade, using a Point-of-Sale system, would actually omit my order and leave me waiting in disgruntlement.

        Still a good family spot~
Came to realise Crystal Jade is still one of the safest bet for a family dinner, it can never go too wrong~ These dishes may be very familiar but I'll still run through some of them la:

Deep fried beancurd with pepper and salt ($6) - very delectable squares of fresh toufu coated in a cripsy batter with salt & pepper, served with the insides still soft and hot. Yum~~

Fried rice with dried canpoy and carb meat ($11.50) - tastes much better than it looks, with obvious crab meat pieces and plenty of wok hei.

Stew Chicken Claypot ($13.80) - thisis called San Bai Ji on the menu, and my favourite dish here :D Fragrant pieces of fresh chicken stired fried with onions and sitting in a deelish dark brown sauce. Quite a waste of the sauce if you dun have rice to mop it up though.

Deep fried garlic prawns ($18) - the pricest thing we had. Think cereal prawns but substitute the cereal for garlic. Nice initially but the rawness of the garlic gets to you after a while. Prawns were less fragrant than I thought as well, maybe I was distracted by the mountain of garlic on the plate.

Baby Kailan stir fried with garlic ($9.80) - Disappoiting especially for crystal jade standard. Although crunchy, the greens were absolutely tasteless :(

There were other stuff which was run of the mill like dumpling noodies and congee with preserved egg & meat. No ambience to speak of, because its afetrall a family place. Noisy family chatter with avergae service, but if you're like us seated right in a corner it can sometimes be hard to catch the staff's attention.

Oh, and their 'pickles' served when you are seated has been changed to endamame :D

The bill came to about $133 for the 7 of us, which was quite reasonable for the variety we had.

          Traumatizing Experience!

Whatever you do, do not order the Portuguese style Beef Brisket Noodle.

Despite the fact that the Portuguese style beef brisket noodle was a chef recommendation, it tasted like a expressway to a heart attack. Beef brisket served with a thick, coconut-based gravy and noodles deep-fried till crispy, there is nothing about this dish worth recommending, but yet it is labelled a Chef's Recommendation. It was a traumatic experience having to shove that dish down my throat. I finally gave up after finishing the meat and half the noodles.

To simply describe how I felt - I was beyond consolation. It was appalling that a brand like Crystal Jade even serves such a horrendous dish. Especially so when everyone else ordered something better tasting than mine. Now I know what horrible food is and what a torture it is to eat it.

Redeeming factors: fast efficient service, pleasant aunties and uncles as wait staff, cozy ambience and the other dishes.

Must Tries: Anything but the Portuguese style Beef Brisket Noodle

Crystal Jade is my all time favourite! I visit Crystal Jade at least once fornightly....

I love the hongkong tea-time menu... (from 2:30 pm - 5:30pm) and each set cost around $6 which include a dan dan noodle and a drink... My favourite dish from the tea time menu is the French Toast Set! The bread soak in egg and fried! It smell so good! The thought of it makes me hungry!

Apart from the tea time menu, they also have their normal menu... or should I say the all day menu....

My favourite dish is the HUA DAN HOR FUN (Egg and Prawn Hor Fun). The prawn is crystal clear and it's very fresh and sweet!

Sometimes together with my girlfriend... we will juz order a bowl of soup plus sweet sour pork together with white rice... WONDERFUL!!!

I love their sweet sour pork! There's really the sour taste... alot of the sweet sour pork doesn't have the sour taste... mainly sweet only...
