I was at the Patara in Tanglin Mall on Friday, 11 Jan 08 for dinner... was not impressed by the food. The Green curry chicken and Red curry beef gravy is so-so... there is too much sweetness in both the gravy. For about $18-$19 per dish is pretty expensive. The sliced meat portion is barely 100-120gm...

My friends and I were astonished that we have to order main dishes before we can enjoy the dessert buffet of $7 per person... meaning if you have 4 people dining all 4 have to choose a main course each before they are entitle to enjoy the dessert... and we queried the manager again if we have a table of 10 do we need to order 10 main course before all 10 of us can have the dessert buffet and the answer is affirmative....

Can you imagine besides mains we also would like to order some salad or soup. how are we to finish so many dishes if we were to crave for some Thai desserts.

BTW, the dessert spread is quite pathetic on that day. Not much home-made Thai dessert very limited besides the fresh fruit platter and jackfruit platter.

There are lemongrass creme brulee which i believe is not authentic Thai. Probably their focus is on ala carte dessert. Our suggestion is to waive off the buffet if there isnt much variaties....

We tried the Deep-fried whole garoupa with 3 sauces... no doubt about the crispness of the garoupa fillet but the chefs should be more careful to remove those bones from the fillet which can be quite dangerous for children.

That system of theirs is pretty odd really but I guess it's to make sure that people don't share the buffet. :) Thanks for telling us!

Gourmet lovers will be impressed by the true tradition of Thai cuisine in this restaurant.

The ambience of these two outlets was surprisingly quiet and cozy, thus making it an excellent place to hold conversation or to take a leisure meal.

    Must try dishes are :

    (1) Black olive rice with minced chicken – Usually most of us would imagine the result to be black fried rice which looked unappetizing. Our friends would even bother to pick out all identifiable olives when we dine in other restaurants. But over here, the taste from the first spoonful of rice was surprisingly good. We actually finished the whole plate without any grain of rice! Oh, by the way, it was not easy to spot any olives as they were finely mixed with the rice

    (2) Fried grouper in Thai chilli dressing – The whole fried fish was presented to us but the meaty portion was cut and fried as fillet. The fried fillet will then be arranged on both sides of the main fish. How considerate of the chef to allow us to enjoy each crispy and chunky delicious piece.

    (3) Pork spareribs – The ribs are marinated in honey and spices before deep frying in hot oil. Fried slices of garlic and peppercorns are sautéed to give a distinctive flavour. The ribs were not over-fried and a bite of it will bring out the marinated juice.

Dining at this restaurant maybe slightly expensive but it is a worthwhile experience to taste true authentic Thai dishes.
