This is one of my favourite place to go for supper. Although once the newspaper claimed its nasi lemak to be expensive, however, I felt that all are priced accordingly to how many side dishes you add onto the plate of nasi. I would not say they are expensive as the nasi lemak stalls at Adam Rd hawker center are priced the same as well.
Their large variety of dishes are always freshly cooked (due to the high number of people going there for their food) unlike other nasi lemak stalls which you would normally see their dishes on their display counter the entire day and had only a few customers.
I guess there are popular for a good reason - fresh and lots of variety.
just visited last week, the food is average only.. somemore the super long long queue make me feel frustrated..
maybe monkey see monkey do...
people rumours around and makes the price go high and the place famous not becos of the food quality...
my market(ABC) nasi lemak even more fragrance than this although the outlook of the shop is sucks..
Recommend to try ONCE to fulfil your curiousity....By then you will know why those famous shop they can anyhow cook their food but still many customer...
Singapore got 6 million people, each person try once they will become millionaire.. Ha Ha Ha...
Lastly if anyone interested to try the same or above the standard of the nasi lemak, can go to ABC market @ bukit merah. the cook is an indian muslim and always wear a "songkok"
but when u see the shop, u will definitely grade then "C-". seems dirty and no decoration...
anyway, the food quality is above average, better than the food in this page.
I visited this stall 2 times within a month. The first time I visited this place because I saw a long queue. The second time was because my son came back from overseas and he wanted to take some local food.
The first time was OK for me but I don't see anything special about the food. The queue was long but the serving was relatively fast. It takes about 15 mins for 15-20 person.
The second time I visited this stall is also my last visit to this place. I have no complain about their service because there is no service required at all.
But I feel that the food is slighly over priced. A plate of nasi lemak can easily cost more than $5. The chicken wing is huge but not cooked ( it happen on both my visit ). The rice is normal and so do all other dishes. The only thing that is nice perhaps is the chilli.
I don't think it is worth queueing and I don't think I will visit this stall again.
Nothing special about this place, after all its just a normal hawker center stall. There are long quees not because of they famous, its just that in that Kovan only a few food outlets are there, and due to recession people shun restaurants and hit hawker centers, and since population too many with our land size, obviously gotta be packed with long quees and stuff.. Long quees are a common sight everywhere.. There is no silent or not so packed place in Singapore these days.. So I wouldnt recommend this one to be on your die die eating list..
My parents and I usually frequent around the Kovan area and went to try the punggol nasi lemak due to the much hype there (as seen from the long snake of queue even outside the road).
The plus point would be their very fragrant rice, but what I seriously like would be how each individual rice stays as its own, not sticking with the others. Love how when you put the rice inside your mouth and it feels 'Yi li Yi li' not moist or clumpy.
Another highlight would be their fried chicken wings, very crispy and juicy. Kind of like the unique spice that they use to marinate the chicken, which makes it different from others. No wonder I could see many people ordering the fried chicken wings in side orders.
However what resulted in the loss of 2 stars would be the staggering price of the Nasi Lemak ! I was shocked when I saw a few small Ladies Fingers, a chicken wing and something else (egg I think), and it costed us so much more than we thought. ):
The queue was extremely long, which probably made the servers a little frustrated, looking unwilling when we asked for curry in the rice.
Punggol Nasi lemak is definately a place which i recommend all people from all over the world must visit.althought it bocomes a bit pricey overy the year, the food there has always been tip top especially their chicken wing its fantastic. Everytime i eat it, it always bring back the good old times when i was young staying at hougang and enjoy it as a supper.
1. The queue seems never ends except when they are close.
2. The drumsticks seem to be overcook but that why people like it.
3. The portion given do not fill up your stomach, that is why people order more dishes.
4. The price is steep but people think its worth it.
5. Parking is difficult but people finds it a challenge.
And at the end of the day, as long as there is demand, the ultimate winner is still the stall owner.
I would still go once a while just to satify my crave.
