5 Reviews for “Sumi Charcoal Grill Yakitori (Centerpoint)” - Restaurants
I went in to try this because there was a promotion going on. The place was quite comfortable. The food was just average. I dislike my soup to be too salty and was rather glad that mine wasn't too salty as I ordered a tomato based ramen.
It was ok to me while the gyoza was good. However, the beef ramen's soup base was too salty. The waitresses were polite and helpful.
It would have been better if they had offered refillable green tea too.

It was another day when the search for food led us to town, this time, to Centrepoint in Orchard road. It was during the GSS season and we happened to chance upon this newly opened restaurant nestled in an inconspicuous corner of the enhanced Food Wing at Centrepoint. Touted as serving Yakitori (skewed delicacies) cooked in white charcoal, this Japanese restaurant also served cheap Ramen below $10. Me and my gf were the only people who went for the set meal that night.
Special Set Menu for 2 ($45) - Seeing that everyone is having the Ramen here brought shudders to me which i can't quite explain, thus, we opted for the GSS set dinner which seemed like a good deal. @ $45 for 2 people, it falls in the mid range. However, compare it to the actual ala carte menu and its easily double the price if ordered item by item.
Mixed Sashimi - The meal started with the mixed sashimi platter which came with squid, swordfish, salmon and tuna sashimi all in one plate. Everything on the platter was fresh and tasted sweet albeit being in a smaller portion. It still felt like a good value item though.
Tofu - The first grilled item to appear was the grilled tofu and to be honest, it was very average. Tasted slightly dry like dao pok and most of the taste was covered under thick teriyaki sauce.
8 Yakitori White Charcoal Grilled Sticks - The sticks included 2 grill corns, 1 grilled enoki mushrooms wrapped in bacon, 1 grilled shittake mushroom, 2 grilled prawns and 1 grilled chicken meat ball. The grilled corn was sweet with a thin layer of butter for a salty finish while the bacon and enoki combination tasted fresh but was a little too difficult to chew through. The mushroom itself was juicy and tasty while the prawns were nicely grilled to a crispy finish with tasty and sweet meat. The chicken meatballs were the least memorable, being salty and overly peppery.
Japanese Organic Momotaro Tomato - This is a wonderful starter actually but was strangely served midway through the meal. The sauce is made up of a concoction that seems to be filled with mustard, peanut sauce, mayonnaise and maybe vegetable oil. The tomato went really well with it too and it should be noted that the tomato itself was firm, juicy, sweet and simply delectable. Something anyone can enjoy.
Chef's Appetiser - The chef's appetiser tastes like vermicelli tossed in thai sweet and sour sauce and is yet another tasty treat that shouldn't be missed.
Pan Seared Foie Gras With Ume Sauce - This sinful item came pretty late as well and to be honest, it tasted pretty well done. The inside were left springy and melts in your mouth while the outer covering of ume (cranberry) sauce enriched its taste on the outside. However, it was oily, very very oily.
Creme Brulee - This creme brulee had the thin layer of sugar burnt just right and tasted good without being too eggy on the inside. I found the vanilla taste just right for this and find it easy to recommend.
Black Sesame Gelato - One taste and you'll find this strong. The sesame taste is present throughout without overwhelming. It was the right sweetness and creamy to the end.
Bill - The total bill for 2 only came up to $57.67 which was great value for a meal with such variety and above average quality.
In the end, i'm glad i tried this place. It serves tasty charcoal grilled Japanese food at bargain prices. I do have gripes about the service and order of food served though. The appetisers did not come first and i had to call at least 3 times before my rice and foie gras was served. It was as though they didn't want to make a loss or something. Still, considering food quality, it definitely is value for menu in this offer. Ala carte and normal prices though...and i probably won't recommend when prices are back to normal.

I had no clue that this place existed till I received this voucher for usage at this restaurant. I knew of this new extension, but it does not strike my mind that this particular restaurant lays there.
Decided to make use of the voucher, but eventually I regretted my decision. This would be my 1st review which scores only 1 star. Here’s why!
The location of the restaurant is not ideal at all. I could frankly say it is not visible to me and I will not know there was such a shop till I knew of it because of the voucher. There wasn’t any great view either; all you could overlook from the windows are rows of cars parked in the carpark. Not a great sight to behold.
The service staffs are all Chinese. Other than the chefs, the rest of them and the restaurant supervisor that took our order are all Chinese. One of the staffs could not understand what I said so the supervisor had to intervene. I felt that there could have been more Singaporeans employed on hand to handle sticky situation. The restaurant is so budget that they can’t even employ a local to do the job, not even on part-time basis.
They have this grilled charcoal concept whereby you could grill your own Yakitori. But to my disgust, they told me I have to make a reservation in order to do so. I find the concept interesting, but it just puts me off and really dissapointed. The guy at the other table also faced the same reply, and he was simply dumbfounded just like I do. He made a fuss out of it but still ended up like us, eventually having the chef to do the cooking for us.
The foods are not really great at all. I get sick chomping on the chewy Bacon Enoki, while the Salmon was below par. The Tiger Prawn was dry while the Chicken Skin was quite bad. I’m not joking here, but I think the best choice among all is the corn.
The voucher could only be utilised upon clocking $50 so we ordered a few more items. Ended up compounding my miseries instead. The Ramen was simply, ORDINARY! The Cha Soba and Foie Gras tasted pretty fair, while I could count myself lucky the Miso Soup was somewhat like the corn.
Ok now what is great? Nothing much except than complimenting the prompt service they provided our table due to the numbers in the restaurant (you get what I mean). Being more attentive, I also observed the difference in greeting. Upon entering, we were greeted in Japanese. It is a different case upon leaving as we were greeted in English instead. There was no proper standard or protocol that was followed. But it does not really matter at this point anymore.
Would I ever come back to patronise the restaurant? NO! Even if it was offered for free, I would not ill-treat my taste buds. Just my two-cent worth, whilst apologies for my long winded review of this 1 star rated restaurant.

The extended wing of Centrepoint Shopping Centre has a basement lined with food stalls and restaurants. But it's like a maze quietly tucked away in the madness of Orchard Road. And out of this maze, I discovered Sumi Yakitori by pure luck.
The light dinner started off with a plate of raw veggies ($1/person including towels). I eat salad but shudder at the raw thick cabbage leaf. The dipping sauce, in which the waitress instructed us to squeeze the lemon into, was like a dark miso-shoyu paste- salty and savoury.
The Tonkutsu Ramen ($8) unfortunately brought a very comforting feel. It was so familiar - Uncannily like Chu Qian Yi Ding instant noodles with the aromatic sesame oil. But I would have preferred a richer broth and the ramen itself was too cooked for my liking.
Sumi seems more like a Japanese grill kind of place instead of ramen house. So we decided to order a few grilled items to see what it offers.
The Fresh Tiger Prawn ($3.50) had blackened legs but fortunately the flesh was protected by its shell. The flesh was sweet and firm but a tad too dry.
The saving grace was the Sweet Corn ($2.50)! Each kernel was plump and burst with sweet juices upon nibbling. The nice smokey aroma by the grilling was evident and complemented the natural sweetness of the corn well.
In a nutshell, don't expect ultra fine Japanese food here. It's more like a budget ramen place with a few stars from the yakitori menu. To put things in perspective, it almost felt like paying food court prices at a restaurant for the ramen.

I was freaking hungry (as usual) one day while shopping at Centerpoint with my Dear Dear. We saw this unique place at the corner and so we decided to try their food.
I had Ramen with spring onions. When it first came, the spring onions were like they are meant as garnishes, rather than the main ingredients. I had to ask them to add more. The taste is normal. I cannot say its awful, just normal. The Char Siu was damn fattening. I saw lots of Fats….. so I passed to my Dear Dear to eat (as usual).
I do like this Tako Kimchi. Very flavourful.
My Dear Dear had Char Siu Ramen. The soup base is not bad. And yes, the Pork was FATTENING!
My Dear Dear likes their Agedashi tofu. Coz he loves tofu, and their sauce is just right - not too salty.
Their Chicken karage is lousy. Very hard & dry. The marinate is like only have soya sauce and pepper. Nothing else.
We tried their grilled Shitake mushroom. Not too bad. I guess they are still the best with their Yakitori. :p
BTW, I was pester by food flies while having dinner there. We complained to the staff and she said - It’s common. o.O
