They have moved from Joo Chiat to this present location. It was much bigger in terms of space but unfortunately lacked the cosy ambience that we enjoyed previously. It look more like a steamboat outlet than a Korean restaurant as the place was sparsely furnished.
We love their side dishes which are refillable and their main meat dishes which are thickly cut and tasted juicy.
As we have chosen the unlimited buffet menu, their helpful staff suggested we try first round of each type of meat mainly marinated pork, chicken, tiger prawns, seasoned beef slices, pork collar and pork belly. If we like any particular type of meat, we can then reorder again. On top of these meat items, we were also entitled to one time selection of soup such as beef, soya bean paste, spicy tou fu or kimchi.
When all the items are placed in front of us, the staff started to lay all the meat on the grill and helped us to cut into bite-size pieces. She then served each of us and even recommended which sauce will compliment what type of meat. Now, that was what we called good service.
We ordered 2 rounds of sliced beef and pork belly because it tasted so delicious and succulent.
Their sparkling drinks and heart-shaped water melon served at the end of the meal really completed our journey of good quality food in a smoke free environment.
We have tried the food items at Bugis Village and were impressed by their food quality and affordable prices.
This time around, we happened to see their weekend set meal for 2 persons and after glancing through the items in the set menu, we both felt that it was a good deal.
Sweet & Sour Appetizer - Looked more like mock shark fin soup though the light gravy has that pork bones sweetness. Generous servings of pig skins, shredded chicken strips and crunchy bean sprouts were found on each spoonful.
Seasonal vegetables - Asparagus stir fried with different types of mushrooms and medium sized fresh prawns. Yummy...
Herbal Chicken Soup - We were taken by surprise on this large portion of kampong chicken herbal soup. Thankfully the herbal taste was quite mild. The meat was indeed soft and easily detached from the bones that we happily finished it within few minutes.
Fried rice - The rice was fried with the right " wok hei " and tasted so good that we ordered another portion for take away.
Overall, this meal was worth every cent. We paid $39.80 for the whole meal. Unfortunately, we were there on the last day of set meal promotion. But the staff has kindly highlighted that they will be having few promotions on some new items and encouraged us to come back to try.
This eating place has advertised their food regularly in Straits Times Classified Section. What caught our eyes are Penang food which was not easy to find nowadays unless you do some food research.
We were there about 8pm on weekday night and were surprised to find many people waiting for their tables. The place was packed full house and we were quite worried about waiting time.
The staff were efficient in clearing the tables and we didnt wait long to be served. Upon flipping their menu, we found interesting items like Fermented Pork Belly, Neptune Fish Maw, Assam Fish Head and Penang Assam Laksa under their Chef's Recommendation section.
Every food item looked good and we were spoilt for choice. Their senior staff noticed our indecisive discussion and walked over to introduce some of their specialities.
Fried Mee Hoon - Such a simple and common dish. But when it was served, it look burnt. After tasting the first bite, it was not that bitter. It was crispy on the burnt areas but the main portion remained moist. The noodle was covered mostly with eggs, vegetables and sizeable prawns.
Salted Egg Sotong - We were worried whether the sotong (squids) would become harden as this dish needed the right balance of fire and the chef's skill. It turned out very well. The sotong remained soft and was well coated with the crispy flour. The salted egg mixture was also not excessively used.
In conclusion, we had a good meal and best of all, the prices are affordable. We will definitely be back to try the rest of their food.
It was such a long time since we last dined at Crystal Jade. Part of the reason was because there are now many of their outlets offering Korean Ginseng, Steamboat, Vietnam cuisine, Deli and Hong Kong Cafe.
We settled on this outlet because they served all day dim sum. Unfortunately, the variety are quite limited . Therefore, we decide to try other food items in the main menu instead.
The first to arrive is Wrapped Minced Meat - We thought that this item will be served completely wrapped but on the contrary, the plate consists of the mild spiced minced meat, thin slices of cucumber and few sheets of pan fried flour sheets. Although a little bit messy ( we need to use hands to wrap ), it was refreshing as the cold strips of cucumber goes well with the meat and flour sheets.
Fried Fat Noodles - By the look of it, it was not appetising as it looked oily with the fat uneven noodles. But one bite, the noodles are smooth and fried well with fresh lard. We finished the small plate in no time with the help of generous cabbage and mushrooms strips found within the dish.
The stir fried baby vegetables (nai bai cai) with garlic was just sweet and juicy. It was cooked almost to perfection with little oil and still remained crunchy.
But we are quite disappointed with the service as the staff seem eager to clear our plates, cutlery and towels while we are still sipping our tea.
We were attracted by the old models of various vehicles which we used or once used when we were young. Over here, these vehicles have turned into showcase display for clothes, confectioneries and accessories.
The item that caught our eyes were recycled containers which had been made into tables or sofa chairs. We tried sitting on the displayed set and were impressed that it was comfy when we leaned backwards. Unfortunately, the price quoted was not within our budget.
The T-shirts were of good quality and price was reasonable. We bought a few pieces from the elderly lady who was very helpful to give advice on certain designs.
Another lady had used the mini van to display her cupcakes and cookies. It was colourful and deliciously tempting.
Other than the freezing aircon, Orchard Central has a lot to offer as there are many small corner shops selling interesting gadgets, accessories, clothes and most of all, unique food outlets
