I was craving chocolate éclairs so we popped by Bugis after dinner one night. Most shops were closing and/or sold out their chocolate éclairs. Fortunately, we stumbled upon Beard Papa and got 2 éclairs, and 2 chocolate molten cakes.

    1) Chocolate Eclair ($2.80). I liked the freshness of the chocolate cream, and it’s really because they only squeeze in the cream when you buy it. The cream was light and frothy, without being too heavy handed

    2) Chocolate Molten Cake ($3). A tip is to warm it up in the microwave before digging into this. The chocolate wasn’t cloyingly sweet, and there were bits of hazelnuts, which was a nice touch.

I brought one of my friends, who loves spicy food, to one of Singapore's oldest Indonesian restaurants for some traditional homestyle food.

      1) Belinjau Crackers and Peanuts ($2.00): Served as appetizers, great with the kick@ss sambal.

      2) Soto Ayam, or chicken soup ($4.90): Hearty chicken broth with shredded chicken, bean sprouts (which I asked to be removed) and a fried potato croquette.

      3) Sayur Lodeh ($6): A medley of cabbage, long beans, fried cubed firm beancurd simmered in spicy coconut milk. This was yummy. It wasn't very spicy (I liked that, but my spice-loving friend obviously didn't), but you can add in the sambal to spice things up

      4) Tauhu Telor ($7): A tower of fried cubed beancurd coated with battered eggs and dosed with spicy sweet dark sauce. This was fresh, spicy, sweet and savoury

      5) Ayam Goreng Istimewa ($10): Traditional fried chicken accented with crispy golden spice blend. We both didn't really like this, it was too dry and tough

Crystal Jade Kitchen is one of my default dining choices because it’s reliable, convenient and serves comfort food. I particularly like this branch because of the exceptional service. Although this place is regularly packed, the service staff are intuitive and show great initiative. That said, I’ve realized that one of the reasons for the Crystal Jade group of restaurants is because of their efficient service standards. They employ a large number of middle-aged aunties whose efficiency and nimble footwork belie their age.

        1) Wanton Soup ($6.80): Thin, silky wanton skins which envelope a whole crunchy prawn. There are about 7 wantons in a bowl, and you can ask them for refills of the soup. Add in a little sambal chili and the flavour is complete.

        2) Dry Wanton Noodles ($7.80): 5 plump and juicy prawn wantons with noodles that retained a nice bite.

        3) Beef Crispy Noodles ($12.80): Egg noodles fried to a crisp, slathered in a thick oyster sauce-based gravy and topped with slices of tender beef, sauteed button mushrooms, slightly blanched carrots and choy sum

        4) Sauteed Noodles with Seafood ($14.50): Crispy egg noodles with scallops, prawns, fish, button mushrooms and choy sum, which is always a reliable and safe choice

        5) Roasted Duck and Chicken Congee ($7.80): Smooth rice gruel with silvers of roasted duck and strips of chicken, topped with crispy flour fritters. Comfort food at its best.

        6) Beancurd Thick Soup with Seafood ($7.50): A thick soup with chunks of succulent scallops, sweet prawns, silky beancurd, earthy mushrooms and egg whites. I love the delicate flavour of the soup.

        7) Hongkong Seasonal Cabbage with Braised Mushroom ($14.80), lightly blanched green leafy veggies with braised Chinese black mushrooms, slathered with luxurious oyster sauce.

This is a gem of a find, a hole-in-the-wall shop selling Thai food near Ah Yat Seafood. Seats are very limited, and when it’s crowded you have to wait to get a seat, then wait again for each dish to arrive. A tip is to go there at off-peak hours. Before 6.30pm for dinner, and after 2pm for lunch. And forget about going there at 7.45pm as they are usually sold out by then, even if their official closing time is 8.15pm.

          1) Tom Yum Soup with Prawns ($6.50): Generous serving of prawns, about 7 huge ones in a standard claypot serving. It’s spicy, sourish and the deshelled prawns are fresh.

          2) Pineapple Rice ($4.50): Chock full of ingredients, medium sized prawns, raisins and slivers of fresh sweet pineapple.

          3) Sweet Potato Leaves in Spicy Sauce ($4.00). This was spicy enough, with just the right about of garlic and chili, without being too overpowering

          4) Pandan Chicken is my favourite dish here ($6.50 for 4 large pieces). Fragrant pandan and succulent, well-marinated chicken.

          5) Phat Thai ($4.50), Thai rice noodles stir-fried with prawns, chicken, crunchy beansprouts, baby dried shrimp, cubed beancurd and scrambled eggs. The noodles were nice and smoky, with fragrant aromas of tamarind, fish sauce, and lime juice.

          6) Thai Red Tea: thick, rich, and sweet.

          7) Kumquat Juice: Sour, refreshing and not too sweet.

          8) Lemongrass Juice ($1.70): a little diluted, but still refreshing

          9) Thai Chendol ($2.50): Strips of jackfruit, cubes of green and pink jelly, red rubies and bits of mashed yam top a sugar syrup coconut milk concoction. Very different from our usual chendol but refreshing nonetheless.

Fish & Co is one of the places that pops into mind when craving the English staple of Fish & Chips. Remember many a O.G. (read: Orientation Group) outing that ended up here for dinner? Yup, it's still a teen hangout.

Every once a while, Fish & Co has a promotion which makes their meals very worth your money. The $9 Autumn Seafood Sensations promotion was one of them.

            1) Swiss Fish and Chips (promotional price of $9): Dory fish fillet battered and fried with cheese in the middle, topped with a cheese sauce. It was creamy and cheesy and generous in portion (for the price).

            2) Captain’s Catch (promotional price of $9): Dory fish fillet, breaded and topped with bbq sauce, and served with clams and rice. The tangy bbq sauce seemed a bit generic and straight out of a bottle but still, it went nicely with the fish. Both fish were fresh, and the rice was fragrant and fluffy.
