I was quite impressed with the range of products they carry and the no. of sales person they have.

I saw the banner on Nikon's promotion and went in to have a look at the products. A sales person by the name of Vincent came to me and ask if he may help me. Obviously I needed help badly. I explained to him that I am a newbie who is looking for somethings which I myself don't even know. I also told him that I ask around and read a lot and wanted to have something that can help me to shoot nice photo. I basically wanted a driver that can drive 200m without having to rotate my whole body. ie, I want a len hopefully to do all I wanted to do. Better still if it is a f2.8.

He recommended me Nikon D60 or D80 because it is on offer and Nikon has a good 17-200mm VR len. But I wanted the 'live view' and he said none of the camera's live view is auto except Sony alpha 350. Besides, A350 (1199) has a stabilizer build in to the body instead of relying on the stabilizer on the len. He recommended ZEISS f3.5 16-80 ($1399) and Sony f3.5 18-250 ($999).

I was told to get the Canon and now is confused by Sony. I really like this guy because he is the only one tell me something good about A350. Infact, A350 has 3 things I like.
    1. Auto focus Live View
    2. Tiltable Live View for downward view ( like Seagull )
    3. Inbuild body stabilizer

But what I don't like is the body ( like plastic ) and not much accessories. Prices for accessories are also relatively expensive. Besides, I was told by my friend the body stabilizer does not help or eliminate the need for the len's stabilizer.

In the end I didn't buy from him. But His attitue is by far one of the best salesperson I ever came across. He never look down on me for not knowing much about cmera and he is not pushy at all. His explanation is valid and clear and I really learn a lot from him.

If you want to know what I landed with, see other review ( if I ever write ).

hmm, sony A350 isn't the only one with live view. The new canon eos 450 also comes with it.

Cathay Photo is one of the most popular photography shop in Singapore. Located at Peninsula Plaza's ground floor, they currently take up three units, each catered for different equipments.

Range of products: Excellent! They carry almost anything that is photography-related. Things you can't find in most photography shops, such as Gary Fong's Lightsphere and Lensbaby, can most probably be found here.

Price: By looking at their price tags alone, the prices are hardly reasonable. But more often than not, they are able to give you discounts, which brings the prices down nicely to reasonable levels. Could even be considered one of the lowest prices in town for certain items.

Service: Pretty good. Having so many sales personnel, there are bound to be a few who don't really know their stuffs. But overall, very friendly people.

If only they close later than 7pm. I find it a little too early for people who have to work office hours like myself.
