I decided to try the ice cream buffet since I had a voucher that stated One for One. The place is rather hidden although it stated Ion. We had to get out of Ion beyond the shutters, so, I was thinking if it really was in Ion in the first place.
Anyway, we found the place after asking the kind staff at Ion who gave us directions. Upon reaching, the seats around the buffet were full. So, we thought it was only that big. After being seated, that was when we realised that just further from the cashier, there were more seats and a group of people were sitting there.
A long queue started after we got our seats. It's wonderful to have a table that's big because we started taking a number of plates trying out the available flavours including the fondue. Strawberries go very well with the chocolate fondue.
The vast number of ice cream flavours overwhelmed us at first because it's the first time we could try all 50 of them. I tried the Bitter Chocolate Gelato, Kiwi and Raspberry, Pistachio Almond (or was it Almond Pistachio?) and one other flavour that escaped my memory now. Personal favourite is Bitter Chocolate since the lack of sweetness allowed my stomach more room for other food.
I tried the cakes and they were not to my liking except for the Oreo Cheesecake, I have a soft spot for that. Just that the cheesecake didn't set well before they served. I think they made the cheesecake once it's all eaten up.
The waiters kept clearing the empty plates as they went along, a really good service. The pancakes on that day were rather nice. Reminded me of McDonalds.
In all, we tried 8 flavours and other food before calling it full. I think we could have tried them all if we had mixed gelatos and ice cream during the course. That way, $22.25 would have been well spent.
went for the ice cream buffet quite a while ago. but suddenly felt like food-blogging about it (:
the key here is caution: what feels like creamy bliss now will later congeal in your stomach to result in a mega lactose overload. my trick is to mix creamy with sour -> alternate scoops of sherbet and classic/chocolatey/cremay ice cream (:
their selection of cakes are a die-die-must avoid. other than the chocolate truffle, i find the rest rather..bad. i had high hopes for the cream cheese carrot cake but it simply disappointed.
the chocolate fountain is heavenly. dip the chocolate cream puffs into the waterfall of chocolatey goodness and you get a beautiful profiterole! other than this treat (which is quite expensive elsewhere), there's the usual fruit and marshmallow you can enjoy.
i loved the waffles. crispy edges with soft centres, goes perfectly with a scoop of vanilla and hot fudge. the mini pancakes/hotcakes should be given a miss. rather hard, when i went for one.
their ice creams were..good. i mean, its swensens! i went for my usual fave, lime sherbet, soursop, sticky chewy chocolate, rum&raisin, the usual suspects which never fail to disapopint
what i loved was their wide and thoughtful selection of toppings. they really had everything! from the healthy dried apricots and raisins, to the decadent mini oreos, to lush red bean, blueberry, and the even more sinful butterscotch, hot fudge..super spoilt for choice!!
The seemingly endless ice-cream flavors should be able to keep you occupied for most of your time there. If not, there are many cakes – oreo cheese cake, apple tart, chocolate pecan pie etc. There are also waffles and different types of toppings to match your tastes for ice-cream.
You can also indulge yourself in the chocolate fondue with marshmallows and brownies.
There is also a special feature in this Swensen Ice-Cream Buffet – the Chop Shop. You let the staff know what are your preferred flavors and they will chop and mix all the flavors with your favorite toppings to create your own unique ice-cream flavor! We mixed Milo flavor ice-cream with chocolate chips and honey – Yummy!
First time to the newly open Ion Orchard's Swensen outlet. So much had been heard about the place especially the ice cream buffet. (I will touch on that later), decided to meet up with my friends for dinner yesterday. Since the place is newly open, I would expect quite a crowd there and the place to be packed to brim during meal times. On a Monday night, I can say that the place is packed to the brim with a long queue outside as well.
When I was looking through the menu, the waiter was quite attentive, coming every 5 mins asking if we want to order. Seems that they added in a few local dishes but if I want to eat dishes like chicken rice, I am sure that Swensens is not the first place I will think of. For mains, we ordered the normal dishes such as Swesens's Combo, BBQ Half Chicken and Breaded Chicken. (All the fried stuff less the BBQ Chicken). For dessert, we decided to go for the ice cream buffet.
Have to say that the mains came out pretty fast, within 15 mins. However have to say the portion or the taste of the food leaves much to desire. The fries are soggy, the fried stuff are oily, no taste, seems like they are fried again food. Simply BAD! With the food on our table, we were not served our cutlery, I have to remind the waiter for it before he too realized that he forgot about it. He came back telling us that they had ran out of knives, instead he passed us some spoons. In short, even after we finished the mains, we never saw the light of the knives. Such a BIG restaurant but they ran out of knives. Hmm....... Meantime, the whole place is buzzing and the waiters were walking past our table every other minute, but to get their attention was such a difficult task.
Next was the ice cream buffet, seems like they got lots of ice cream and topping to offer, still have waffles, mini pancakes, both dark and white coco fondue with strawberries and marshmellows and some pies. Too bad one of the ice cream fridge is down, this means all the Gelatos are out, we have 15 less flavors to choose from. However the price of the ice cream buffet did not drop due to that. I am very very disappointed with the buffet. From very sour strawberries to lack of ice cream flavors, and the service of the crew tending the ice cream bar really needs to improve (a lot!).
From the initial excitement to major disappointment! There is only 1 thing I am going to say: I AM SO NOT GOING TO SWENSENS ANY TIME SOON!
