Coleslaw   Rotisserie Chix Whole   London style fish and chip   The star of the meal. Chicken   Signboard
I had walked past this place so many times and yet I had not had a thought of walking in for a meal. There are a few reasons, first being there always seem to be a long queue outside the restaurant. Secondly, the place serves the kind of food that does not appeal to me. Thirdly, I was always in rush when I was walking past this place. So finally one fine day, we decided to give this place a try, well there was no queue and I thought that it was all good timing. I sort of regretted my choice when I stood there waiting to be shown to a table.

The place did not seem crowded, in fact can see a few empty tables, but we have to wait at the counter. It seems like the waiters and waitresses, even the managers (well they are the ones wearing more formal), are all very busy and everywhere except the counter where we are waiting. Not even one saw us standing at the counter, making me like an idiot. After about 5 mins of waiting, I told my partner that I will count to five, if till then, no one comes up to us, we will go another place for dinner. Lucky enough (don’t know for them or us), we were ushered to a table that is pretty much near to the edge of the corridor where tons and tons of people walked past, felt like animals on display.

The decoration of the place is pretty much trying to be hip and getting the attention of the teenagers, so that they can come in, eat and spend money. There is a pool table to play and even a candy floss station where you can get free candy floss. There are tables like a capsule where a big group can be seated together. The rest of the tables are like those normal kind.

Well after the bad start, my mood was not very good to start off with. Being seated at that location, it was difficult to get the attention of the waiters. It was really frustrating but finally managed to get one and come and take our orders. So what we ordered?

Root beer float @ $7.60: This came in the A&W style. Big mug of nice cold root beer with a big scoop of ice cream in it. Nothing special but it still taste great. Nice. I do find it a bit expensive for it though. Sigh.

London style fish and chip @ $9.90: This came with a big piece of fish, chips and tartar sauce. That it! No coleslaw or salad or whatever. This is really a ripped off! The fish is a bit flaky, not really fresh, maybe frozen. The batter is a bit too thick. Nothing to wow about. I wonder what do they mean by the London part. I understand in London they served it with vinegar but I dun see them doing that. Hmm….. This is really disappointing.

American Coleslaw @ $4.90: I don’t know it is me or the coleslaw but I do find the taste of the coleslaw a bit weird. Maybe too much mayo or too much vinegar but it does not taste like any normal coleslaw. I got to say this is one of the worst coleslaw that I ever eaten. It was so bad that I did not even finished the whole coleslaw. It is that bad. There is no way I am going to order that again.

Rotisserie Chix Whole @ $14.90: After eating or tasting all the above mentioned food, I did not have high expectation for this dish. However, I was wrong. The dish turned out to be great. The chicken was moist and tender, not dry at all. The size of the chicken is also quite huge, for small eaters, they can just order this and share. The sauce that came with the chicken is perfect for it. This dish is above average. Try this and you will not regret especially after a string of disappointments. This is the one that deserves 4 stars.

After this, we decided to give the desserts a miss and asked for the bill. Again, it took us sometime to get the attention of the waiters for the bill. The bill came to us pretty fast but we paid for it and waited for it to return. We waited and waited with the water at least topped up twice. We asked for the waiter to check on the bill but it seems that it never came back. I wonder why? In the end, I got a bit pissed off and signaled to the manager and ask him to check the bill which after a wait of 10 mins, the waiter finally brought it back to us. I really wonder what happen at that time. I have therefore decided after this experience, there is NO CHANCE that I will ever return to this place for any meal ever again!

J Co Donut Box   Some of the J Co donuts
I have heard of this brand of donuts for sometime especially from those who had been to Indonesia. They had been saying that this brand of donuts one of the best there. Some even say it is better than Krispy Kreme. Wah. This is a very big thing to say. Finally I had the chance to taste it when they open their first flagship store in the newly create Raffles City Basement. No need to search for it, just follow the smell, you are able to find the store already.

I was there and have to say that Singaporeans are quick to try all things new. There was a long queue going on, people trying out their new donuts. Other then selling their donuts, they also open a café where you can drink their drinks while eating and smelling their donuts. Wahahaha. Their café is a bit small, can only seat a small number of people.

Well you can read from the above post on how they sell/pack their donuts. A person is in charge of a few flavors of donuts, so you inform him/her what you want then she will grab whatever is within reach, if not, they will pass it to the next person to get the donuts from you. This will go on until you reach the cashier at the end of the line. I did not have to wait long but I did not managed to get ot buy all the flavors that I want.

They got quite a number of different flavors of donuts, at least 10 plus over flavors. From the normal almond glazed one to special ones that have crème inside the donuts. I tried a few and I shall use the almond glazed donuts as comparison. From the outlook, it does look like any other donuts (the same kind) that are selling from other donuts shops. My first bite into it, the donut is soft and simply melts in the mouth. The almond glazed is not too sweet. Pretty good. I dare say one of the best. For other flavors like

Alcapone which got lots of almond nuts with white chocolate, but my mum prefer Donut Factory version.

Tiramisu which is loaded with tiramisu cream inside. A bit sweet, not for those who don’t like cream.

Whynut which inside is filled with peanut butter and the donut is topped with white and milk chocolate.

Well after tasting a few times, I think some of the donuts are actually quite good while some of them are just average. To me it is just another donut company that came into Singapore to grab a slice of the pie. I will still go back to eat the almond glazes provided there is no queue. I think it is sooner or later you will see that they will pop up all over the little island of ours.

2 pieces Fried Chicken Set   Blueberry Waffle   Blackberry Waffle   Retro Looking Chair
This place is a well hidden café in an ulu location. If HFB is not here to mention about it, I think I will never discover a place like this. Hee… Thks bro. All thks to him, FZ and bobo, I got the chance to visit this place. It is inside this building, Balmoral Plaza along Bukit Timah Road. Well I least I know I got a direct bus from my house now. Hee….

When we reached, I got this brought back to the 80s feeling, because everything there is so retro (as put by Claudia). They got both outdoor (read: smoking) and indoor seats. Outdoor seats can be very noisy as it is next to the road where traffic can get quite heavy and noisy at times. For the indoor decoration, it is a very spacious with quite a number of seats and a few seats in the middle of a room. The counter and the kitchen took up half of the space there. Very simple designed. I loved the seats there. How should I put it? Hmm…. It is very “A&W” if you understand what I meant. Wahahahaha.
Since it is called Wafflestown, they have to sell waffles, all different kinds of waffles and of course they also sell fried chicken as well. Yum Yum! We ordered 2 piece fried chicken set and 2 waffles.

2 pieces fried chicken set @ $6.70 per set: When it came to our table, it looks like those chicken sets that are sold across all the western stalls in those coffee shops. It looks simple and I have to say not impressive on presentation. On the plate, there were 2 pieces of medium sized fried chicken, with 2 side dishes of coleslaw and French fries. I have to say that looks can be deceiving. The fried chicken came piping hot, once I tear the meat apart, the steam can be seen. Even though, some people did complain that it is a bit oily, but hey, it is fried chicken, supposed to be oily. Wahahahaha! I always like fried chicken. I liked their fried chicken; it is crispy on the outside, but moist and juicy on the meat inside. The chicken is also seasoned slightly, making the chicken tasty as well. The coleslaw is average; however it has all the big chucks of vegetables inside, making it very crunchy. The fries are normal, nothing fanciful.

Now to the stars of the day, WAFFLES @ $4.90 each! We ordered Blueberry waffles and Blackberry waffles. Instead of the normal round waffles, both came in rectangular shapes. With a scoop of ice cream on top and covered with blue and black berrys and whipped cream along the sides. First on the waffles, they are FANTASTIC! One of the best I ever tasted! It is crispy on the outside but soft in the inside. It had big squares in it so that can hold the ice cream inside as well. The blueberries and blackberries are also good on their own. They are not too sweet but full of their own flavors, they came in big sized berries as well. Together they are a great combination. Based on the waffles alone, it is enough to make me come back for more!

Expect for the bit ulu location which is my only complain. I think I will be back for more if possible! Go and give it a try!

Popiah   Nasi Lemak Set   Iced Milk Tea
We were thinking what to eat before around Marina Square area when I thought of this place when I had read the good review on Yebber, so decided to head to this place and give it a try. Given its prime location where you are sure to see it, you will not miss this place at all. Well once you come up of the Citilink escalator; it is just right in front of you. It just looks like a small kopitiam. It got both indoor (air-con) and outdoor (non air-con) seats along the corridor.

From the review about, can see that this place only serves a few kinds of food from Nasi Lemak to Mee Siam to Popiah. They also got desserts and all different kind of drinks as well. They even produce their own kind of drinks (Like Grass Jelly and Tea etc) and pre-packed it by themselves. They go by self service, so when you want to order you have to go to their counter, tell them what you want to order, then pay at the cashier at the end of the line.

I got myself the following food:

Nasi Lemak @ $3.90: There are a lot of different sets to choose from. The prices ranging from $3.90 to $4.70. I ordered mine with otak and chicken wing. The rice is green in color and smells very fragrant. It is hot and soft with a heavy smell of pandan. However it is the only good thing. The otak is that normal kind, nothing to wow of. The chicken wing is warm, not hot but still managed to retain its crispiness. However I do find the wing a bit small sized. The rest of the side dishes are ikan belis and peanuts. I am not a person who can handle hot stuff well, but the chili did impress me a lot. It is a little hot yet sweet at the same time, making it a great combination with the nasi lemak. Overall, this dish is slightly above average.

Popiah @ $1.90. $2.30 if you want to add prawns or chicken: This popiah to me is a bit disappointing. The popiah looks a bit too wet on the plate; therefore I knew that it is going to be soggy. True enough, once I put it inside my mouth, it turns out to be soggy. Although it is packed with a lot of ingredients inside but it does not totally removed all the juices, making the popiah too soggy. It is also a bit tasteless for me. For the price I am paying, I expected it to be better. I have tasted better ones at a cheaper price some more. I will not order this again.

Drinks: Hot Coffee @ $1.10 and Iced Tea @ $1.50. I shall only comment on the tea. I do like their version of the iced tea, thick milky taste which I looked out for in an iced tea! It is good enough for me just to go back and buy their ice tea next time.

Since it is self service, the service at the counter is pretty prompt, as they only prepared (or use the word “packed”) the food when you order. They are also quite flexible as you can change some of the items in your set as well. One thing, they do not charge 10% service charge here. The prices they charge also quite cheap as well comparable to food court prices.

It is a good place if you need a place for quick food or you need to satisfy your urges for Nasi Lemak craving. Wahahahaha……

When I was in primary school, I dun like to see a student taking a white card walking into class room. Cos it means someone in the class will be summoned to the dentist! At that time everyone hope that their names will not be called. One of my classmates even burst into tears when her name is being called. Wahahaha!

So an appointment was made and the days leading to the appointment were very anxious anticipation. Well, the truth is I last visit a dentist was like 2 years ago. I knew my teeth are in very bad state as well.

So on the fateful day (today), we headed toward Apex Dental Surgery after work. The clinic is a small but well equipped one with friendly assistant and dentist as well.

When I went into the room, I saw nothing but the dentist chair only, but the dentist, Dr Tan, is kind enough to see that I am nervous and made some small talk with me before starting the procedure. After verifying some of my allergies, she began to start work on my teeth. The drill like tool was placed in my mouth and the sound of the drill started to flood into my ears. While she was gently cleaning my teeth, I was like looking somewhere else trying to distract myself, at the same time reminding to open my mouth wide so that the drill will not go crazy in my mouth.

Dr Tan is really professional and gentle, telling me that it will have to take some time for her to clear the dirt in between the teeth and some level of pain might be experienced. In between, she will still engaged me in some small talk, while she is cleaning away. At times, she will stop and ask me rinse my mouth to clear away all the dirt.

After about 40 mins of work and I mean hard work, she is finally done. I am done. Not without her, telling me about my wisdom tooth and my few holes that needs fillings as well. Sigh... The cost of cleaning of teeth $70. Finally the "nightmare" is over and I left the clinic with clean teeth again! Think I will be back soon for the fillings and a 6 monthly check up.
