This may sound like a grumblilng post, but I hope someone will do something about it.

Being a commuter everyday on SBS buses, I've to say I'm not quite please with what I'm getting. Especially when they're going to increase their fares another time.

I'm sure many commuters like myself experience the same thing daily while going to work or returning home. And I'm sure SBS know about the situation. At the peak period when everyone's getting to work, the bus is usually super packed. And at times, there'll be a higher frequency or an empty bus starting its jorney at a later part of the route. But this doesn't happen everyday and usually we need to be lucky to catch such a period. If not, everyone will have to squeeze into the already packed bus or wait for another similarly filled bus or suffer in hunger at the bus stop to wait for one bus that's not packed to the entrance so that you can board without feeling like a sardine.

Besides the peak period problem, some buses with air-con was stuffy and warm. Obviously there's something wrong with the aircon at the upper deck but would the driver know about it? I doubt so, cos the lower deck aircon was working fine. People at upper deck had to suffer the long and jammed up journey from the heat from the sun and the stuffiness from the broken aircon. Shouldn't SBS be servicing their buses reguarly to maintain and avoid such situation?

I would have given a one star rating but then how can we avoid these situation in such a service?

Hmm..personally, I have not met with any incidents that gave me bad impressions of our bus drivers.

Instead, I have met with quite a few that are polite, courteous and were really serving the passengers to the best they could.

Two of the drivers I met, greeted every single passenger that went onboard the bus, with a smile. I was taken aback in fact, not used to a greeting aboard the bus, yet..it was heartwarming to have someone greet and smile at you when you are getting to work or school everyday, repeating the dull cycle and fighting the morning rush to get to your destination. A real chore, to be honest. Yet..the greet and smile certainly made the start of my day, a little better. :)

The other driver even took it to another level by announcing the destination of every next stop! Really, though I wondered if anyone was listening hard enough, it was really a heartwarming and interesting gesture that..I really appreciated. It's really not easy to be doing that, and..these little gestures really made my day. :)

Another encounter with a A-star driver, was just a few weeks back, where the weather outside was pouring cats and dogs. This particular driver was really thoughtful and made sure all his passengers got on and off the bus dry. Even when passengers at the bus stop were holding umbrellas and started walking the bus, which was behind, he made it a point to assure them, and motioned for them to wait at the stop, as he would move forward for them to board after the bus in front had left.

Also, more than once did I hear bus drivers patiently explaining enquiries about the directions/routes and bus numbers to passengers alike, and some even made the effort to inform these passengers when they have reached their destination.

Little gestures can mean so much. :)

I don't know if anyone has ever seen this poster at the bus interchange that states that SBS is the only transport service company out of the many other taxi and bus companies that obtained a gold star award. Of the many hundreds of employees in SBS, one of them got the rare award - a Gold Star in service .

I don't know if people are impressed by this publicity, but I am not particularly impressed or anything. Instead, I'm not surprised why only one of them got an award, out of the many hundred potentials.

I was on one of the buses that left from Bedok Interchange one day. As I was seated at the front of the bus, naturally I'd want to alight from the nearest door - the front door. There was no one boarding the bus and I was the only one alighting. However, the bus driver refused to open the door for me. He did not even try to explain why I should exit from the back door but just showed a hand gesture indicating that the only way I can alight is through the back door.

Another time was when I was on the bus and I over heard a conversation between a foreigner and the bus driver. The passenger wanted to find out how to get a particular destination but wasn't able to express herself well in English. The bus driver did not understand her and went "Huh?" in an extremely loud and rude tone.

Perhaps it's the high expectations of us consumers, but I feel that it's not right for people working in this arena to behave in such a manner as it reflects more than just the individual themself.
