Scanning through their menu, we realized that they not only served Peranakan food but also catered to other diners who wanted just simple and ordinary dishes. We ordered the following :
Crispy Chicken Bites
The chicken meat was crispy and golden on the outside but tender and tasty on the inside. A special chilli sauce was served for dipping. Not oily and definitely juicy as the marinated meat was bursting with flavour
Bakwan Kepeting
This is a traditional dish of minced pork and crabmeat being shaped into meatballs and then put into a broth containing fine slices of bamboo shoots. The broth was very sweet and the meatballs were also soft and tender.
Ayam Buah Keluak
This must-try dish was a true Peranakan item and is an acquired taste. The gravy was rich with buah keluak ( a strong-tasting nut from Indonesia ) which has a distinctive flavour. The tangy richness of the gravy together with the braised chicken meat and the stuffing in each nut was simply shiok!!
Sotong Hitam
This is another dish not commonly found in other places. Fresh baby squids are cooked in its own "ink" and tamarind gravy. The squids are soft and not over-cooked. Though they looked messy and black, a bite of the meat and you will not stop eating them.
We were satisfied with our choice of dishes and this place is one where we could really taste good old home cooked authentic dishes as Nonya cooking was largely based on home recipes.
Bobosaid: wah I've heard of this place and always wanted to try... haha now it seems there's a good reason to. what was the damage? 12 Mar 2008 at 9:39 am
Muffysaid: Spent about $150 for 4 persons. It is worth spending as not many places served dishes that are close to our taste 24 Mar 2008 at 11:12 pm

We suddenly have this craving for tau sar piah and knew that there were a few shops around Balestier selling them.
We have chosen 603 Tau Sar Piah as we saw quite a number of people queuing up to order. Some were actually waiting for their piping-hot and fresh from oven pastries.
We ordered some varieties such as yam, white lotus, durian, black sesame and the traditional sweet as well as saltish ones. This shop also sells pineapple rolls, chicken pies, both tuna and curry puffs as well as barbeque pork buns.
We liked the taste of all the flavors as the fillings are not too sweet or too saltish. The pastry for each tau sar piah was light and fluffy. We personally like the black sesame, yam and the pineapple rolls.
The black sesame filling was smooth and has a very aromatic taste when you bite into it. The yam filling was moist, soft and not so sweet. The pineapple rolls were fantastic with thin layer of buttery pastry wrapping around the huge portion of pineapple fillings.
The tuna puff tasted a little spicy. But the curry puff was very good with generous fillings of potatoes. The barbeque pork bun was also delicious as we could taste the sweet and smoky sauce and the meat filling was tender and easy to bite.
All items were freshly prepared and with such liberal ingredients in their pastries, we would recommend to anyone craving for such snacks.
Stepping back in time. This was quoted in last week Sunday Times.
When you walk past this narrow shop at the end corner, you will smell the traditional aromatic coffee. This Hainanese coffee shop has been around for almost 70 years. Yes, no change in the decor. 1960s ceiling fan, retro mosaic green color wall tiles and seven ( only seven ) marble-topped tables which are available for dine-in.
Not only is this place good for its traditionally roasted coffee powder, it is also famous for freshly baked and oven-hot buns. Their custard puffs and cream horns are highly recommended but be prepared to wait as the workers only serve those in queue. No advance orders will be entertained.
Most of the people who turned up dont mind sharing tables as the people waiting for seats are more than the people who are sitting down enjoying their cuppa and puffs.
Service is below expectation as most of the workers have worked here for many years and therefore, the only duty is to serve coffee and pastries. No customer rapport or quality attention are available here.
Due to the over-crowding especially during breakfast, most customers just drop by to buy boxes of their pastries and head towards other nearby coffee shops to enjoy them peacefully.
Roastiing a chicken is a healthier method than frying it in hot oil. Have tried this outlet several times a year and each time, you will walk away a very satisfied customer.
Understand from the manager that they use the freshest chicken and marinate them with natural herbs and spices. It is then slowly turn over a hardwood fire, allowing fat to escape while sealing in the wood-roasted flavour. The wood roasting makes the chicken taste as good as it looks.
Eat the chicken skin. You will realise that it is not fatty but evenly covered with the spices that give you an awsome feeling like as if you are eating sashimi.
Besides chicken, the outlets also serve ribs, wide range of side dishes like coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, soup and small cute muffins ( should try theirs!! )
Give this place a try if you are near Suntec. It is worth visiting.
Ayam Penyet is actually fried chicken served with rice. What is special about this dish is that the chicken is deep fried and then flatten with a mallet ( small hammer ) to loosen the meat. Together with a separate plate of fragant rice, it sit on top of a powerful sweet, hot and slightly sour sambal which will give you a good kick or punch when you bite both together.
At $3.50 for a plate of rice, chicken and a bowl of soup, this stall has gained popularity in Singapore. Beside this main outlet, the owner has opened another 9 outlets spreading through north, east, south and west of Singapore.
