please dont throw rocks at me, but i think the food at ikea restaurant is over-rated.
the meatballs taste like the frozen, shipped, processed meat that they are, and the spaghetti that comes with it is..sweet.
the special on the day i went was fish & chips with chives sauce. i think it wasnt too great an idea, ended u; with a whole lot of soggy fried stuff on my plate. definitely not worth the calories.
never get their mushroom soup, campbell's does a better job..love their miushroom potage soup.
their potato salad ($1.80) is not bad though. the portion is a bit small but its nice and creamy (:
there's this marzipan cake that's not bad, i cant recall the taste but i like the white icing.
going to ikea? hungry? just stick to their $1 hotdogs (: you can never go wrong with free flow chilli/ketchup.mustard.
honestly i think carls jr is more than reasonably priced.
i shared a guacamole bacon cheeseburger onion rings free flow drink set with my friend, total bill came up to about $12, and we could barely finish the food.
compare that to paying also around $6 at macs, but you get soggy fries, mystery meat and diluted milo/super bitter iced lemon tea/strange random soft drinks.
the gbc is..heaven. the spicy avocado sauce, the strips of chewy bacon, the grilled smoky beef patty, there's really nothing like it. beats botak jones flat, if you ask me. it doesnt feel as oily, too. like its adverts say, it really is messy. even after the burger was sliced nicely in half, there was quite a lot of mayhem in getting my half out of the paper wrapping.
the onion rings are the biggest i've ever seen, and it really puts bk to shame.
the staff wont offer you their sauces, but i like their honey mustard sauce. i shamelessly dapao-ed some home and they are good to put in ham-and-lettuce sandwiches. their salsa and mayo goes quite well with the onion rings.
i liked the fact that you can make your own drink concoction, being an extremely fickle person (can never decide which drink to get). i loved my iced lemon tea sprite lemon (:
now my only regret is not having brought a camera there..
i always like to go there to watch there smash the ice cream with toppings..and stare at the toppings, but ytd for the first time i finally got to eat!
it was also the first time that i couldnt make a decision cos all the flavors taste weird. english/irish toffee (cant rmb), aussie vanilla, ferrero are all the type of flavors that even the sample is too much to handle "jialaat".
in the end, i got the junior cup cone for peanut butter ice cream, and it was seriously too much to finish. first few bites were ok but after that..it was quite a torture, honestly.
my friends got:
mango with passionfruit topping: extremely sour! but nice if you alternate it with peanut butter ice cream.
tiamara with mars bars: nearly broke my teeth on the mars bars. ok only
generally i think cold rock is over-hyped and over-priced. never going back there again
waitresses are cheerful and VERY strong, in my opinion. the posh artsy serving plates are quite heavy.
ordering is self-service, you pick what you want and write it on a piece of paper. honestly i prefer it this way cos really, nobody wants a waitress hovering arnd your table whilst you try to hurry into a decision.
good: har gow ($2 for 2 huge ones, 1.5 prawns in each), spicy zha jiang mian with veg ($6.50, its name has some emperor in it), shanghai fried noodles, this dish which has cheong fun wrapped arnd illogically crispy fried spring roll.
okay: pork dumpling (the biggest dumplings you've ever seen, seriously)
bad: xiao long bao (its just..off. the idea of placing it in little aluminium muffin cups is pretty smart, tho), kai lan in chicken sauce ($4 for a few miserly strands, chicken sauce=salt corn starch coloring)
all in all, we ordered 10 dishes for 3 people and paid $38 (including gst & service charge)..and we had to dapao. so its pretty worth it, a good (and cheaper) change from crystal jade, if u ask me.
just returned from boss' treat at this restaurant (:
for one, its really ulu. to reach the restaurant, you have to either own a car or love to walk..but the plus point is that its quite quiet.
wasabi prawns with broccoli was really good, the broccoli very fresh and prawns large and juicy..together with the wasabi-spiked mayo, the dish was really oishii!!
mango-prawn roll was slightly disappointing, boss commented that he couldnt tell whether it was mango or banana
hargow and siew mai were average, i was never a big fan, plus at this point it was really prawn overload!!
the spinach with 3 eggs..my grandma's version is nicer. this one was spinach in some soupy gravy topped with egg, century egg and little cubes of salted egg yolk.
anw other than the fact that i didnt get water top-ups, and the chilli sauce plates were placed unreasonably out of reach, it was good food (:
