    36. Marutama Ramen

Marutama Ramen feels like a little piece of Japan, with a fierce looking, bearded Japanese man shouting shrilly in Japanese, and customers huddled round the counter slurping bowls of hearty chicken broth.

I was lucky to get traditional, fuss-free counter service, with the huge bowls of egg looming over my head, with a brilliant view of the chef tossing the noodles and spewing out some irasshite or sth like that with every order.

Ordered the $12 ramen - spicy soup and regular chicken soup were both delicious, esp with the garlic chips. The noodles were a classier affair of our hawker centre wanton mee, with a slice of the best char siew, ever.

dumplings ($5 for 6 large ones) arrived in a bowl of vinegar and ginger, which were slightly above average.

overall a great experience, service and food wise.

went there on 19 Oct 2008, sunday night for dinner.

got 3 main courses and 4 salads.

grilled salsa chicken: flavourful chicken topped with melted cheese and salsa.

filet mignon: they claim its "tender", my parents believed the menu (i didnt) and..well lets just say between sizzler's and shashlik, shashlik presents a more accurate definition of the word "tender"

st louis pork ribs: good ribs (: yummy bbq soft with moist meat.

      salad bar:

crunchy papaya salad rocks! tart papaya with crushed peanut.

antipasto salad was interesting, with olives and..i just liked the olives actually.

coleslaw was good, a nice change from kfc's watery version.

malibu chicken salad: well-marinated chunks of chicken, sweet mango cubes and crunchy french beans.

get the blue cheese dressing!! put a bit over broccoli, cauliflower and some romaine lettuce, its amaaazing.

singapore noodles is a joke, instant mee with copious amounts of sesame oil.

fruits were not really good. watermelon and dragonfruit were sweet enough, but the rock melon was plain bad, sour even.

soups were really good, minestrone and clam chowder (dont take too much) were extremely creamy, with generous ingredients. paired with the garlic bread which is REALLY REALLY good (but salty), its heavenly.

ice cream bar: i looovee the vanilla soft serve with chocolate syrup (: to me mcdonalds hot fudge sundae is the best ever, and this one comes a close second. (orange julius' is last) the choc soft serve tastes extremely chemical and not at all chocolatey.

        38. Shashlik Restaurant
           10 Oct 2008 at 1:53 pm
Snooty service aside, the food here is really..amazing.

Generally, I cannot stand beef steaks. For a chewy piece of bloody meat, the calories I have to force down my throat is really not worth it. But this one is worth the intense gym session i just had to get rid of all that fat (:

        Starters:

Cream of corn soup ($6/7 can't rmb) : Sweet, creamy, with lovely bits of corn floating around. The serving is generous (or maybe cos it's in one of those soup plates..) and should really be shared

Cream of mushroom soup ($6/7 can't rmb): Tasty enough with thinly silced mushrooms in every single spoonful.

Russian salad ($4) : This one is plain weird. Imagine a coleslaw without mayo, potato-carrot salad, 3 slices each of tomato and cucumber, some onion, one pickle and a long sprig of spring onion. Anw don't order this, a small bowl of the coleslaw thing will come with your main course.

        Main courses:

Garlic steak ($25/26 again can't rmb): Super good!! For the first time in my life, I had a beef steak which had the texture of hamburger. It wasn't mushy, it was just THAT tender. And with the fried garlic, the dish is really indescribable. Amazing.

Mushroom steak ($25/26 i really shld be taking memory classes): Should be the same as the garlic steak, except with your usual mushroom sauce. But definitely order the garlic steak if you don't have to breathe into someone's face later on, for whatever reasons..

        Dessert:

Baked alaska ($16; the menu says serves 2 but they're bluffing) : Half the fun is in watching the waitress light up the alcohol and pour it on the dish. They'll slice it up upon request, and I got a white creamy slice of ice cream, peaches, maraschino cherries and (i think) some-alcohol soaked sponge cake.

at the price we paid ($368 for 10 people), the food was rather disappointing. i'll go dish by dish.

          1. cold dish / appetizer
interesting presentation, instead of everything in one plate, the various parts of this are put on separate serving dishes. there was duck, garlic-fried hum, some pig's part, jellyfish (yum!)

          2. sharks fin
i never liked this dish. but for this, add soy sauce plus chilli padi and its quite nice.

          3. steamed soy sauce fish
again, ordinary. por kee at tiong bahru does a much better job. even my grandma can reproduce this in our humble kitchen.

          4. sea cucumber with mushrooms and broccoli.
the broccoli and mushrooms soak up the starchy gravy really well (:

          5. beancurd skin with kai lan
my parents told me if you don't have anything good to say, then don't say it.

          6. garlic steamed prawns
steamed prawns sliced in half (no messy peeling!) with copious amounts of garlic on it. simple yet fragrant.

          7. yam with some meat
i say "some meat" cos i cant rmb what it is. anw it had lots of yucky fat.

          8. hing hwa bee hoon
after lifestyle's 100 best eats raved about it, i admit i was quite excited to try it. the texture is rather unique, soft and silky, but taste wise, its a bit on the bland side. but the servings of clams and prawns were generous

          9. cheng tng
clear (reduced sugar) dessert soup with crunchy gingko nuts, one red date and lots of white fungus. a homely end to a homely meal.

               avocado-roll.jpg   hotpot.jpg
haha first time my review got photos (:

anw visited sushi tei for 1st time in many many years at serangoon garden (4 oct). had to wait arnd 20 min cos it was a sat night and no reservations allowed. (or my friend forgot and bluff me)

so anw i'll cut the crap and jump to the food

            1. avocado roll. buttery avocado, fried prawn and if that won't give you an aneurysm, the very health-conscious people of sushi tei throw in a few lashings of mayo. utterly decadent.

            2. beef kaminabe. everyone giggles over this gastronomic vulgarity so i wont. very warm and comforting dish, miso soup base and a lot of veggies, mushrooms. the beef wasnt too great tho.

            3. spicy miso ramen. i alw like to order this, but this version was rather a disappointment. i think seafood party instant noodle tastes better.

they have this separate "healthy" menu which i didnt look at, but looks quite promising.

but i was quite impressed with the service. we requested for iced water and less than a minute later, two glasses appeared on our table!
