My bff claims this place isnt too great, and I secretly wanted to see how bad it could get. But it wasnt as awful as she described..food was quite passable and i was impressed by the service (: Best of all, SMU students get a 10% discount by flashing your matric card or student pass (with smu logo)!

    Onto the food!

Tom Yum Seafood Soup ($1.99 with any purchase..of main course? cant rmb) Lots of juicy mushrooms, not much seafood. Soup was not too sour or spicy.

Sambal kangkong was quite good, though cooked in a very chinese fashion. As we requested, it wasn't too oily.

Seafood hor fun was passable, my favorite thing about it was the vegetables (not pictured cos i excitedly ate them all up) and the gravy before it liquidized ):

Stewed thai beef noodle soup: soup was ok. The beef instant noodle bowl my dad got his friends to ship over from taiwan is nicer. This dish..I'd say its hygenic. Each mouthful is of clean-tasting lean beef, crunchy beansprouts and rice noodle.

All in all, an average experience for average prices.

Service is inconsistent - unbelievably slow the first and third visits, reasonably fast the second time. No tap water served though.

To me, Shin Tokyo has good quality food, full-stop. Their food standards seem to be unfazed by the 99cent price tag.

Tori chicken wafu cream baked rice ($9.80). I think. Or some combination of the words. Creamy rice, fried chicken chunks with carrots and a little green tree of broccoli as an afterthought. What's not to like?

Some of the white-plate (all 99cent) highlights!

Ebi fry sushi. Die-die must try!! Crispy mini-prawn fritter topped with tangy mayo on rice, its carb&fat heaven!

Spicy Ebiko Roe. Another die-die must try! How to eat: slowly mix the spicy sauce with the ebiko roe (very carefully), then eat it one half at a time. The taste is undescribable..in a definitely good way.

Inari kani salad. Another one of my favourites - sweetness of the beancurd skin paired with the creamy kani salad..oishii!

         kimchi ramen
i wouldn't exactly call it a japanese restaurant, given that it also serves western, korean and thai food. overall, i'd say the presentation (photos wise) and quality is above average. value for money, with very friendly service.

had the kimchi ramen ($6.50), a HUGE bowl of noodles with lots of spicy kimchi and springy noodles. the kimchi was so good i bought some back ($3.50). not too tongue-searingly spicy, and none of that sourness that makes you cringe.

friend had the sashimi tempura set, seriously value for money. sorry no pic, forgot to take :p anw it had a plate of sashimi (2 maguro/tuna, 2 salmon, 2 some white sashimi, 2 sticks of crabstick), tempura (2 ebi, some veg), veg salad (gorgeous dressing), mayo crabmeat salad, fruit (watermelon, honeydew, orange slice), miso soup and rice. all for $16!

i only wish they had better presentation, make the food look a bit more atas cos the photos on the menu look a bit..lc.

           Mango Shaved Ice
service was wonderful and homely, the glasses of lemon-flavored iced water were definitely a plus point. quick too.

tables and chairs were a bit cramped and small, tho. the cheesecakes looked quite good.

the shaved ice ($3.80) was rather bland, and quite disappointing, frankly. definitely part of the 'less sweet' revolution in the food industry right now which i cant stand. but thats market economics for you. anw back to the food, even though the ice was bland, it did have a rather interesting, mildly creamy texture; and overall tastes decent with together with the mango cubes.

all in all, definitely a place for those who dont have a sweet tooth.

50% off dim sum on weekdays, 40% off on sundays (sats? not sure) and public holidays!

dim sum is normally priced at $3.80 and $4.50, which means you get your lovely hongkong goodness at either $1.90 or $2.25! plus plus, that is..

must order: fried seafood roll. its..one of those fried things with wispy things outside. dont know how to describe, but its heavenly. $4.50 originally.

xiao long bao: skin a bit thick, a bit too oily. but for this kind of price, im not complaining.

siew mai: gorgeous! its the kind with a bit of meat and a proportionately bigger prawn (:

pan-fried dumplings: again, very delicious. simply amazing with the vinegar and ginger. best part is, its very pretty as this purposefully charred bit is stuck there. not really charred, it can be eaten without fear of cancer..but its just this crispy bit thats v nice (:

          char siew pau: YUM.

cheong fun: quite small and sad looking, but quite good.

overall, a great deal with really good food! and its "branded"!
