My family decided to give this place a try after seeing it featured in the newspaper. I rather good experience I must say. They also adopt the food market concept, much like Marche and Vil’age. The place is relatively big, and sits quite a lot of people.
The food’s pretty decent, and you can find Marche-favourites like rosti amongst the other japanese food. The yakitori corner serves up a wide variety of stuff too.
The sashimi platter was quite disappointing actually, costing $15 for 12 slices of sashimi. I quite liked their grilled saba, and some other yakitori stuff like the scallops and mushroom. The mushroom soup ran out by the time I placed my order, but it looked quite good.
The burgers come in really huge portions, costing $9 at most. Think Carls Jr., but bigger. Yes, it’s really worth the size, only that the taste isn’t too fantastic - frozen salmon patties.
Dessert was good. I quite liked their homemade cheesecake, with a soft feel and nice crust below. The raspberry (I think) sauce on top really goes well together. The cake costs about $4, and can satisfy your sweet cravings. Not too rich, not too sweet, and not too large a portion. The other dessert I tasted, the mango slush ice, wasn’t at all worth it. Basically a bowl of crushed ice sprayed with mango juice and topped with very little mango, costing $7 - bad choice.
Overall, the ambience was decent. Service however was a little bad, with long waiting times to collect food - almost 20 min for my yakitori to be ready. Dinner for 4 cost about $150, slightly more costly than what we’d pay if we had dinner at Sushi Tei. But of course, it’s a different experience, even if it came at a higher price. Still, I found it rather expensive, partly because we over-ordered.
There are quite a few more items I have yet to try, and would probably give it a shot again. If you choose the right stuff to eat, you’d probably get a good deal out of it.
After a looooooooooong queue, but it’s worth it.. The other day i tried their Shokudo Japanese Pasta at Citylink, and now i have also tried their Shokudo Japanese food Bazaar.. What can i say ?! They have real cool concepts !!
When you enter the restaurant, they have these samurai costume (look kinda of fierce), kimono (that’s too huge for somebody to wear.. Is that meant for wearing in the first place..?), and some more Jap stuff which i have forgotten.. (got distracted by the wide range of Jap food..) Like Marche, they have different corners that is with different designs.. And they even have a kids corner too ! (Heehee..) Murals are beautifully drawn, i must say..
Oh yes ! I tried their robatayaki (skewers).. Yummy-lic-ous !! Gotta try the prawns wrapped with bacon and the tsekune.. Also, their teppenyaki..!! Whoooo ! Fantastic ! It’s soo savoury, especially the Beef Tenderloin.. Tender Juicy Beef Cubes dip into the sauce, together with roasted garlic slice ! Shiok !
I had the ramen and sushi also.. Mmm.. Sushi was fresh and very professional slice.. As for the ramen, pretty good.. Not sure if the noodles was hand-made..? Mmm.. Anyway, i regretted not taking photos of those food that i have ordered.. If not, i would be able to post it here and tempt all yebbers.. (Haahaa..)
I’m going this Sat again, with my Australian friends.. I’m gonna impress them with our Singapore biggest Japanese restaurant.. (Heehee..) *Let’s see if i can take some photos..
i didn’t think this was particularly great-i bought some ramen here and it wasn’t spectacular, just so-so...i didn’t try the matcha latte here but it’s colour looked a little strange...for authentic matcha drinks you should go to ochacha which is just next door, it specialises in matcha items and they taste good.it was kind of a let-down because i thought that it would taste good.its gyoza was ok, but not the best.i haven’t tried their burger but it sounds pretty nice...was in the news
I started to have interest in this place when I read a review for this place in the papers. I made a point that I will visit this place soon enough. Soon enough, I got the chance when I was in Raffles City looking for a place for dinner. Not to mention that I visited this place twice in a week. Haha….
I was expecting to see a long queue as someone had posted a long queue photo on STOMP a few days ago. Wahahaha…….. Surprise! Surprise! There was no queue at all. Maybe we were early, about 6.30pm on a Tuesday, or we were just plain lucky. Hee…. However by the time we left the place around 7.15pm, the queue is there and it went all the way to the escalator! It was the same on a second visit, on a Sunday, there was no queue as well. Since then I just think that I am plain lucky. Wahaha…… So lesson learnt, to beat the queue, arrive before 7pm.
Since it was my first time there, the waitress at the entrance, explaining how the restaurant works. This place works like Marche. Each of the customers is given a card. This card will record what food or dish that you have ordered. Before leaving the place, the card will be given to the cashier then pay for the food. You will be also given a reserved table tag that you can place it on your table, so that other people know that the table is being reserved, no need to use a packet of tissue paper any more.
However, you can find your own seats. Good and bad about this point, cos you can seat wherever you like, but there will be some people who seem selfish, 2 people would seat at a table where the table is meant for 6 people. Sigh…. Meantime looking for a table is the easy thing, if not the staff there can help out. It would be better if they could have designated seats at the door instead. Hee…. There are both cushion sofa seats and normal chairs as well for you to choose from.
The interior of the place is huge and the decoration is quite simple as well with a bit of fusion going on, same as their food as well. The walkways are wide enough for a crowd but their queuing system could be better. The stalls are quite well allocated as well; means are the same type of food is grouped together. This means starters all at one location, mains at one location then desserts are another location etc.
Now to the food, they offer a variety of Japanese and fusion food. From sashimi, sushi, BBQ skewers, Japanese steamboat (nabe) to rosti and burgers. They have it all.
Omelette @ $5.80: There are different fillings for this Japanese style omelette, from plain, cheese and mushroom to crab meat. I have tasted their mushroom and cheese omelette and I loved it! Their omelette is unique in a shape of rectangle and it is made fresh when ordered. You can see the chef patiently preparing it. It is done layered with the fillings inside. It is soft and fluffy. The taste is very good as well. It is a must try worth every cent for it!
Assorted Tempera @ $10.80: Assorted tempera which includes two prawns, fish, golden mushroom, egg plant and mushroom. This one also prepared when you ordered. The batter is thin and crispy, not overwhelming or oily. The only things that disappoint me are the size of everything, quite small, even the prawns. I did not know golden mushroom can be used for tempera but it does not taste good as it became very dry after deep frying.
Garlic Fried Rice @ $5.80: This one is a disappointment as the fried rice is pre-fried and garlic is added to it when you ordered. Nothing to shout out for this fried rice. Not worth the money!
Shabu Shabu @ $8.80: This one is just soup in a steamboat. The soup tastes like plain water but there are a lot of different vegetables and a few slices of meat. in the soup. They are all put inside the pot and cooked over hot fire when ordered. For this, the most important thing is the soup base, and it failed terrible. Totally not worth the money.
Chicken and Egg Rice Set @ $6.80: This one is they used cooked chucks of chicken put in a pan with some soy sauce, then put over hot fire. After a while, add some egg on top, cook for a little more time, then place the whole thing on top of some rice, added a few pieces of seaweed. Wala! Done. Another disappointment, very normal dish that I could get in any other food court at a cheaper price. The chicken is tasteless, some like rubber. Not worth the money.
Assorted Sushi: The sushi came with a very nice presentation, all placed on top of a wooden board. However the sushi is a disappointment, the rice is not packed as a whole, and it will crumple when picked up with chopstick, the rice is not sticky enough. Although, the piece of fish on top of the rice is a fairly large piece but then rice fails the test.
Rosti: This is a western food right? However they are serving it? That is what I thought in the first place. I was a bit apprehending to order this but then the dish surprised me. It is good, in fact very good. The rosti portion is not that big but it came hot and crispy! So crispy on the outer layer but soft on the inside, not dry at all. Combined with sour cream, it is simply wonderful. This is also a must try!
Green tea ice-cream and red beans fillings crepe @ $6.80: This crepe is not the usual thin crepe, this one came quite thick and tasted like pancake instead. The ice cream is normal green tea ice cream but the red beans are those whole red beans which I like. It is an average dessert for me nothing to wow about.
The service is quite slow as the food are only prepared when you ordered, so be prepared to wait for your food. The place can get quite noisy especially when you seat next to big groups. The servers are quite on the ball to remove empty plates from the tables.
Be prepared to queue when you get in and be prepared to queue when you are going out to pay for you bill as well. They got four cashiers but only two were functions when I was there on two different occasions.
The overall experience is quite ok for me. The food does not really attract me that much to go back again. I dun really think I will go back unless my friends want to go and try it out. ON the average I think each person will cost around $20 to $40.
Oh yah! They got two neo prints machines in the middle of the restaurant. Something special. Looks fun when you can eat and take pictures with your food at the same time. Good idea! Wahahaha….. I think I will do that next time!
Craving for Japanese food? Why not give Shokudo a try? But be prepared to be stuck with too many choices!
After reading the above reviews, I decided to give this place a try. The chance came and I went on this mini adventure of mine at Shokudo...
Thanks for the reviews here, I already know what to expect at the entrance. And I quickly got into my adventurous mode the moment I stepped in. *haha!*
The first impression I got was Wow! So big! It’s about the size of the old Marche at Heeren. But cos this place is done up in a Japanese kind of style with minimum decorations around the place, it seems slightly more spacious than the old Marche. As it was a weekday, there wasn’t much crowd when I went. With many tables available, I skipped the “Reserve table” part and went on to find food.
After going around the place, I kinda got lost of my orientation. (Perhaps I was too hungry then.) Good thing I didn’t place my “Reservation token” at any of the tables, cos I would most probably forget which section it was. The place is divided into various themes so customers can decided where is more suitable for the mood they’re in. (This is not quite possible if you go on a crowded period thou.)
As I was alone, and having limited cash with me, I opted for something friendly for my wallet and tummy. I bought a “Hakodate” Seafood Cheese Pizza ($8.80) and a glass of japanese orange peel drink ($price forgotten). The pizza is made fresh upon ordering, so I settled down with my drink to enjoy the peacefulness during that time. There was soft music playing in background and I was totally relaxed and enjoying my time alone after a long day of meetings.
The pizza was different from the one we usually see. This was served in a rectangular wooden pan and the pizza crust was thin and crispy. There were plentiful of toppings and one bite into the pizza will make you want to have more. The pizza might not look big nor sufficient for the hungry people, but if you’re having it alone, its fills just right the right amount in one’s tummy. Due to its thin crust, you’ll not feel “sick” of the pizza.
The pizza with the refreshing orange peel drink - a perfect match!
Never judge the food by its queue. Food is low quality given its price. Service is bad. No decent Japanese will visit this place. At most go try it out of curiousity and Never be back! Ambience like canteen with all the bickering. No service and wonder why pay 17% GST and service charge. Food court jappy meals offer better value. Having said that, I trust all of U to form your own conclusions. I think this place wont last more than a couple of years honestly.

Shokudo is a name that you can get familiar with in a hurry. Why? Firstly, it has 2 branches already counting this one, being a Marche-like concept and the other located nearby in CityLink which specialized in Pizza and Pasta. We’ll be reviewing the Marche lookalike this time around on the food quality.
Upon queuing and entering the premises, you’ll be greeted by friendly serving staff who’ll provide you with 2 items. Firstly, you’ll receive a card thats basically your best friend, losing the card results in a penalty fee of $100 which is rather absurd if you ask me. The second item you’ll receive is a round wooden placeholder thats supposed to reserve a seat for you whereever you put it. However, this simply did not work because our first reservation chip was stolen from our table and some other lady managed to get in our reserved seat... So i’m saying the system may work elsewhere, but apparently not in Singapore.
The interior of the Bazaar is split into several different themes with a food court like design in the middle, more colorful lighting and cushy seats in other areas. Rather pleasing and different from an aesthetic perspective. The food preparation areas resemble Marche with the exception of everything being Japanese food or fusion in some instances. The only problem i had with the arrangement is the waiting time for each order. Its pretty ridiculous to wait 20 mins for a beef burger but i’ll get to that later. The service staff were alright and courteous but can be improved for sure.
Wasabi Toro Cheese Burger ($7.80) - The name is nice, wasabi toro burger. Whatever that means i’m not too sure but to me, its a beef burger with a supremely small patty of beef wrapped in an extremely bad tasting and oversized bun. I had to wait close to 20 minutes for the above. Can you see where the time went into preparing it? I certainly couldn’t unless they mashed and prepared the patty on the spot but i highly doubt that. The bun is fused to an egg which thankfully made it bearable but the miserly portion of beef was terrible visually. Not to mention that when tasted, it simply wasn’t up to par, being dry and too hard. Simply terrible.
Bacon and cheese Omelette ($5.80) - My gf ordered this and the next item. Thankfully they were more palatable then my horrible choice but even then, not by much. The bacon and cheese omelet was a really small portion which could be finished in 4 spoonfuls. The omelet itself was served warm and with bacon and cheese melting within it. A little too salty however.
Rosti with Sausages ($9.80) - Since when did rosti become a Japanese item? Nonetheless, in a world of below average food, this managed to be a cut above the rest. Fragrant, hot and crispy with a soft interior. This took the crown that day but thats certainly not saying much. The sausage that came with it was your run-of-the-mill sausage with cheese in it. It wasn’t bad per se but nothing exciting about it as well. The one thing about this dish is, its oily to a fault. You’ll notice it the moment you have your first bite until your nausea inducing ending.
A mediocre and sub par meal came up to $27.50 for 2 people. If i’m ever in the vicinity again, i’ll stay far far away.
I don’t know what the matter is. The food portions were pathetic. The service was slow. The true japanese items were price sky high and the seats were only moderately comfortable. Why would i pay to eat here when there are so many better places out there? Good for people who want to see what the buzz is about but if the quality and portion size doesn’t improve, i fear a quick exit will be the order of the day.
If you have read some of my reviews you might already know that my boyfriend is a big sucker for Japanese food and since we like to eat together (it’s like our favourite pastime as a couple. ahahaha), I agreed when he brought me to this Marche-like Japanese restaurant.
First impression.. Cool. Stalls offer different food.. And there are purikuras (photo sticker station) at the middle of the restaurant. Didn’t try it though.
Went there twice and our orders were kinda the same. Omu rice.. Gyoza.. Omelette.. Some satays.. Hmm can’t remember.. (yes we order a lottttttt)
The omu rice is like.. er... Rice with tomato ketchup. I know it’s supposed to be some tomato rice, but really.. Tastes like rice dipped in tomato sauce. And we gotta wait so long.. About 7 minutes plus. Well I would have been able to agree had the restaurant not been empty (it was not “peak hour”). Same goes to other items. Gotta wait for minutes and minutes and minutes. It’s getting irritating when you order a lot and expect to eat soon (and the restaurant is not crowded!) but told to wait wait and wait. Sigh..
Ended up with 30 plus bill. My wallet is not happy...
Polarbear said: Hmm.... they prepare on the spot. Of cos got to wait. Relax. next time ask ur bf to wait while u wait at the table. Hee..... 21 Apr 2008 at 8:59 am

What’s gd
I like their crispy thin pizza which taste like crispy biscuits saddled with bonito flakes. Its important to choose the right flavor because certain food simply do not blend together in a pizza setting. I personally like the mentaiko asparagus flavour because the mentaiko is not too fishy and melts harmoniously with the cheese and bonito flakes to create a simple & fresh ( probably brought out by the asparagus).
What’s not
The curry potato pizza is something that I will refrain from trying again.. simply because it taste like our familiar old chang kee curry puff without the buttery crust.
Ramen being an important japanese cusine, was a kind of let down at Shokudo because the texture of the ramen was too hard and rubbery, and the soup was too salty for my palate.
Tip
Strangely, I suspect the owners are trying to create some kind of cold climate similar to Japan because the air con is pretty cold. Hence, the egg omelette that you’ve painfully queued for the past 15 mins may cool down soon by the time you reach your seats. Hence, try and gulp your food fast. Eat first, then talk.
My Dear Dear said wanna buy me dinner one day. Heheehee.. this is the place.
It’s something like Marche or Village, only that it uses magnetic chip to record your order.
We ‘chop’ our table using this. But you need to know where you ‘chop’ coz this thing got no number or name.
We ordered alot of things, not becoz it’s my Dear dear’s treat, it’s all the food looks good!!!
Seafood Thin Crust Pizza - Interesting. Not too bad. Not much of fishy taste. I like the crispiness.
Rosti - So-so. Servings a bit small. I still prefer Marche’s.
Katsu Curry Rice - My Dear main dish. Not very nice. The Pork Katsu very tough and thin. The rice so-so. The Curry is ok.
Unagi Bamboo Rice and Chawanmushi - My main dish is the Unagi Bamboo Rice. Taste a bit funny. Maybe it’s the bamboo smell too strong. The Chawanmushi is very delicious! Very sweet and flavourful! I had two orders! :p
The queue to go in forever long during Meal times. Maybe next time I will try to go at odd hours.

Will be back for more.

Nice concept, so-so food, too expensive...
